A single shot of tequila (1.5 ounces at 40% alcohol) will typically clear your bloodstream in about one to two hours, but traces can linger in urine for up to 80 hours and in hair follicles for months. The exact timeline depends on how much you drank, your body size, and the type of test being used.

How Your Body Processes Tequila

Your liver does nearly all the work. It breaks down ethanol (the alcohol in tequila) in two steps. First, an enzyme converts the ethanol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, which is responsible for many of the unpleasant effects of drinking. A second enzyme then quickly converts acetaldehyde into acetate, a harmless substance your body can use for energy or discard.

This process runs at a remarkably fixed pace. Your liver handles about one standard drink per hour regardless of what you do. Coffee, cold showers, and exercise won’t speed it up. If you had three shots of tequila, expect roughly three hours of processing time before the alcohol itself is gone from your blood. Drinking more than your liver can handle means the excess alcohol keeps circulating, which is why BAC rises when you drink quickly.

How long tequila is “in your system” depends entirely on what’s being measured. Active alcohol in your blood disappears relatively fast, but your body leaves behind metabolic markers that tests can pick up long after you feel sober.

  • Blood and breath tests: These measure active alcohol and reflect your current level of impairment. Alcohol is generally detectable in blood and on a breathalyzer for 12 to 24 hours after your last drink, though for moderate consumption the window is shorter. Federal workplace breath tests flag results at a concentration of 0.02 or above.
  • Standard urine tests: A basic urine screen detects alcohol itself and has a window similar to blood tests, roughly 12 to 24 hours.
  • EtG urine tests: These look for ethyl glucuronide, a metabolic byproduct your body creates when processing alcohol. EtG can be detected for 24 to 80 hours after drinking. The often-cited “80-hour window” is a worst-case figure seen after heavy drinking of six or more drinks. For a couple of shots of tequila, 24 to 48 hours is more realistic.
  • Hair follicle tests: Alcohol markers embed in hair as it grows and can be detected for one to six months. It takes several weeks after drinking for the marker to appear in a testable strand, so this method captures patterns of use rather than a single episode.

Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Elimination

While the average rate is one drink per hour, several variables shift the timeline in meaningful ways.

Body Weight and Composition

Alcohol distributes through body water. A larger person with more lean mass has a bigger “tank” to dilute the alcohol, so their blood alcohol concentration peaks lower after the same number of drinks. A smaller person reaches a higher peak BAC and needs more time for their liver to bring it back to zero.

Biological Sex

Women generally have a lower proportion of body water than men of similar weight, which means the same amount of tequila produces a higher blood alcohol concentration. Research also shows that women tend to have lower alcohol elimination rates (measured in grams per hour), largely because of differences in lean body mass and liver volume. The net result: after identical drinks, women typically carry detectable alcohol longer.

Age

As you age, your body composition shifts. Lean muscle and total body water decrease while body fat increases. Because alcohol dissolves in water rather than fat, older adults achieve higher blood alcohol levels than younger people even when the dose is adjusted for body weight. This means the same two shots of tequila will stay measurable longer in a 60-year-old than in a 25-year-old of the same size.

Food in Your Stomach

Eating before or while drinking slows alcohol absorption significantly. Food causes a valve at the bottom of your stomach to close during digestion, preventing alcohol from reaching the small intestine where most absorption happens. Greasy, high-protein, and fatty foods are the most effective because they take longer to digest and keep that valve shut longer. This doesn’t change how fast your liver works once the alcohol is absorbed, but it lowers your peak BAC, which means less total processing time.

How Many Shots Changes the Timeline

Since your liver clears roughly one drink per hour, you can estimate your timeline with simple math. One standard shot of tequila (1.5 ounces of 80-proof liquor) counts as one standard drink according to the CDC.

If you had two shots at 9 p.m. on a mostly empty stomach, your BAC would peak within about 30 to 45 minutes and take roughly two hours to return to zero. Active alcohol would likely be undetectable in blood or breath by around 11 p.m. to midnight. An EtG urine test, however, could still flag positive the next day.

Five shots at 9 p.m. is a different situation. Your liver needs approximately five hours just to process the alcohol, putting you at zero BAC sometime around 2 a.m. at the earliest. Breath tests could read positive well into the early morning hours, and an EtG test could detect metabolites for two to three days.

These are estimates for an average-sized adult. If you’re smaller, older, female, or drank on an empty stomach, add time. If you’re larger, ate a full meal, or have a naturally efficient liver, it may be slightly faster. But the one-drink-per-hour baseline is consistent enough that it remains the most reliable rule of thumb.

Why You Can Still Test Positive When You Feel Sober

Feeling sober and being alcohol-free are not the same thing. Your brain adapts to alcohol’s effects over the course of an evening, so you may feel clearheaded while your BAC is still elevated. This is especially common for people who drink regularly, as their tolerance masks the impairment that matches their actual blood alcohol level.

EtG tests add another layer of confusion. Because they detect a byproduct rather than alcohol itself, you can test positive a full day or two after your last drink, long after any impairment has passed. This matters for anyone subject to zero-tolerance workplace testing, court-ordered monitoring, or probation screenings. The test doesn’t measure intoxication. It measures whether your body processed alcohol recently.
