THC can stay in your system anywhere from 24 hours to 90 days, depending on the type of drug test and how often you use cannabis. For the most common test, a urine screening, a single use is typically detectable for 3 to 4 days, while regular use can be detected for up to 21 days after your last session.
Those ranges vary quite a bit from person to person. Your body fat percentage, metabolism, how much you consume, and even recent exercise all play a role. Here’s what to expect for each type of test and the factors that move the timeline in either direction.
Why THC Lingers Longer Than Most Drugs
Unlike alcohol or stimulants, which dissolve in water and flush out relatively quickly, THC is highly fat-soluble. After you inhale or ingest cannabis, your body converts THC into a metabolite called THC-COOH, which binds to fat cells and gets stored there. Your body then slowly releases these metabolites back into the bloodstream over days or weeks, and they’re eventually filtered out through urine.
The half-life of THC-COOH in urine (the time it takes for the amount in your body to drop by half) is roughly 30 hours after a single use, based on a controlled study at Johns Hopkins University. But when researchers tracked excretion over a longer 14-day window, they found half-lives ranging from 44 to 60 hours. That slower tail end is the stored metabolites gradually leaking out of fat tissue, and it’s the reason heavy users test positive so much longer than occasional ones.
Urine Tests: The Most Common Screening
Urine testing accounts for the vast majority of workplace and legal drug screens. Most standard tests use a cutoff of 50 ng/mL, meaning your sample needs to contain at least that concentration of THC metabolites to count as positive. Some tests use a more sensitive 20 ng/mL cutoff, which extends the detection window significantly.
At the standard 50 ng/mL cutoff:
- Single use: Detectable for about 3 to 4 days
- Moderate use (a few times per week): Detectable for roughly 5 to 7 days
- Daily or near-daily use: Unlikely to produce a positive result longer than 10 days after the last use
At the lower 20 ng/mL cutoff:
- Single use: Up to 7 days
- Chronic daily use: Up to 21 days
The often-cited “30 days” figure for heavy users is largely a worst-case scenario rather than the norm. Research published in the Drug Court Review found that even for chronic users, it would be uncommon to produce a positive result longer than 21 days at the lower cutoff concentration. That said, extreme cases do exist, particularly for people with high body fat who have used heavily for months or years.
Blood, Saliva, and Hair Tests
Not all tests look for the same thing or cover the same time frame. Blood and saliva tests detect active THC rather than stored metabolites, so their windows are much shorter. Hair tests work in the opposite direction, capturing months of use history.
Blood Tests
THC enters your bloodstream within seconds of inhaling and peaks almost immediately. Blood concentrations drop rapidly over the next few hours as THC redistributes into fat and organs. For occasional users, THC is generally undetectable in blood within 24 hours. Frequent users may test positive for a few days, since their baseline blood levels stay elevated from constant replenishment out of fat stores.
Saliva Tests
Oral fluid tests are increasingly used in roadside screenings and some workplace programs. According to Cleveland Clinic, cannabis is typically detectable in saliva for up to 24 hours. This makes saliva tests better suited for detecting very recent use rather than habitual patterns.
Hair Follicle Tests
Hair tests have the longest detection window. A standard 1.5-inch hair sample captures roughly 90 days of drug exposure, since head hair grows about half an inch per month. These tests are designed to identify patterns of regular, long-term use. They’re less reliable for detecting a single instance of cannabis use and can’t pinpoint the exact date you consumed, since hair growth rates vary from person to person. Your hair needs to be at least half an inch long for a valid sample.
What Speeds Up or Slows Down Clearance
Two people who smoke the same amount on the same day can test positive for very different lengths of time. Several factors explain why.
Body fat percentage is the biggest variable. Because THC metabolites bind to fat molecules, people with more body fat have more storage space for these compounds. Someone with a lower body fat percentage and a faster metabolic rate will generally clear THC metabolites more quickly than someone with a higher BMI. This isn’t a small difference. It can shift the detection window by several days.
Frequency and amount of use matters almost as much. Each session adds to the reservoir of THC stored in your fat tissue. A single puff from a joint deposits far less THC than a daily habit sustained over weeks. Chronic users build up a deep backlog of metabolites that takes much longer to fully drain.
Potency and method of consumption also play a role. Edibles, concentrates, and high-THC flower deliver more of the compound per session than lower-potency options, which means more metabolite production and a longer clearance time.
Hydration and metabolism influence how quickly your kidneys filter metabolites into urine. Being well-hydrated dilutes the concentration in any given sample, while a naturally faster metabolism processes and eliminates compounds more efficiently. However, age, genetics, and liver function all contribute to metabolic rate in ways you can’t easily control.
Why Exercise Can Temporarily Backfire
It seems logical that burning fat would help clear THC faster, but the timing matters. A study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence had 14 regular cannabis users exercise for 35 minutes on a stationary bike and found a small but statistically significant spike in blood THC levels immediately afterward. The mechanism is straightforward: exercise breaks down fat cells (a process called lipolysis), which releases stored THC back into your bloodstream.
The increase was positively correlated with BMI, meaning people with more body fat saw a bigger spike. Fasting produced a similar effect. For long-term clearance, regular exercise likely helps by reducing the total fat reservoir where THC hides. But exercising in the 24 to 48 hours before a blood or urine test could temporarily raise your levels at exactly the wrong moment.
Can You Flush THC Out Faster?
The internet is full of detox drinks, supplements, and protocols claiming to clear THC from your system quickly. Most of these work by one mechanism: diluting your urine. Drinking two or three 12-ounce glasses of water can produce up to tenfold diluted urine within 30 minutes, which may drop the metabolite concentration below the test cutoff.
Labs are aware of this. Most testing facilities measure creatinine levels and specific gravity in your urine sample to check whether it’s been diluted. A sample that’s too watery gets flagged as invalid or suspicious, which typically means you’ll need to retest under closer supervision. Some programs treat a diluted sample as equivalent to a positive result.
There is no supplement, tea, or pill that accelerates the biological breakdown of THC metabolites stored in your fat. The only reliable ways to shorten your detection window are time, a lower body fat percentage, and not using cannabis. Everything else is either dilution (which labs can detect) or marketing.
