Detection Windows by Test Type

The type of drug test matters more than almost anything else when estimating how long THC will show up. Each test measures a different biological sample, and each has its own detection range.

Urine tests are the most common, especially in workplace screening. The standard detection window ranges from 1 day to 5 weeks. A single, small dose generally falls near the lower end of that range, clearing within a few days. Chronic, long-term use pushes detection toward the upper boundary. Why THC Lingers Longer Than Other Drugs

Most drugs are water-soluble, meaning your body flushes them relatively quickly. THC is fat-soluble. After you use cannabis, your body stores THC in fatty tissues throughout your organs, where it releases back into the bloodstream slowly over time. This is why a frequent user can test positive weeks after their last use, while someone who tried it once might clear it in days.

Your liver converts THC into a primary metabolite that drug tests actually look for. This metabolite has a half-life of roughly 30 hours after a single dose, meaning it takes about 30 hours for your body to eliminate half of it. With extended monitoring, researchers at Johns Hopkins found that the effective half-life stretches to 44 to 60 hours. Each half-life cycle removes half of what remains, so it takes several cycles to drop below testable levels, and the more THC stored in your fat, the more cycles you need.

Factors That Speed Up or Slow Down Clearance

Frequency of use is the single biggest factor. Someone who uses cannabis daily for months has far more THC stored in their body than an occasional user. Beyond that, several biological variables shift the timeline:

  • Body fat percentage: Higher body fat means more storage capacity for THC. People with greater fat stores tend to release THC more slowly, extending the detection window.
  • Metabolism: A faster baseline metabolism processes and eliminates THC more quickly. Age, genetics, and overall health all influence metabolic rate.
  • Body weight: Closely related to body fat, but heavier individuals in general tend to retain THC longer.
  • Hydration and diet: These play a smaller role than often claimed online, but severe dehydration can concentrate urine and make a borderline result tip positive.

One counterintuitive finding: exercise can temporarily raise THC levels in your blood. A study of 14 regular cannabis users found that 35 minutes of moderate cycling on a stationary bike caused a small but statistically significant spike in blood THC. The mechanism is straightforward. Exercise burns fat, and burning fat releases stored THC back into the bloodstream. This doesn’t mean exercise is bad for clearing THC in the long run, but an intense workout the morning before a blood test could theoretically work against you.

CBD Products and Unexpected Positives

If you use CBD oil or other CBD products and assume you’re safe from a THC-positive test, that assumption may be wrong. CBD products are not tightly regulated by the FDA, and their labels are frequently inaccurate. A 2017 study of 84 CBD products sold online found that only 31 percent had labels matching the actual CBD content. More critically, 21 percent contained THC despite advertising zero THC on the label.

The THC levels in these products are typically low, but they can still accumulate with regular use and produce a positive drug test. Full-spectrum CBD products, which intentionally contain trace amounts of THC (up to 0.3 percent by law), carry the highest risk. If you’re subject to drug testing, broad-spectrum or isolate CBD products are safer choices, though mislabeling remains a concern across the industry.

Secondhand Smoke Exposure

People exposed to secondhand cannabis smoke can have detectable levels of THC in both their blood and urine. In practical terms, brief exposure in a ventilated space is unlikely to push you over the 50 ng/mL cutoff used in standard urine screening. But prolonged exposure in a confined, poorly ventilated room, like sitting in a car or small room with heavy smokers, increases the risk meaningfully. It’s not a reliable defense for a failed workplace test, but it’s also not a myth.

Federal and Workplace Testing Rules

Despite expanding cannabis legalization across states, federal workplace drug testing rules have not relaxed. The U.S. Department of Transportation still lists marijuana as a prohibited substance for all safety-sensitive positions, including pilots, truck drivers, bus drivers, ship captains, and pipeline controllers. DOT drug tests use urine or oral fluid specimens only. Hair testing, point-of-collection tests, and instant tests are not permitted under DOT guidelines.

A positive test, or even a refusal to test, means you cannot work in any DOT safety-sensitive position for any regulated employer until you’ve completed a formal return-to-duty process. Many private employers outside DOT-regulated industries also continue to test for THC, though policies vary widely by state and company. Some states now prohibit employers from testing for cannabis in non-safety-sensitive roles, so your local laws matter.

Realistic Timelines for Common Scenarios

Putting the research together, here’s what typical detection looks like for a standard urine test with a 50 ng/mL cutoff:

  • One-time or rare use: 1 to 3 days
  • A few times per week: 1 to 2 weeks
  • Daily use: 2 to 4 weeks
  • Heavy, long-term daily use: 4 to 5 weeks, sometimes longer

These are estimates, not guarantees. Individual biology creates wide variation. A lean person with a fast metabolism who used once will almost certainly clear faster than these ranges suggest. A heavy daily user with significant body fat could test positive beyond the upper bounds.
