THC can leave your system in as little as 3 days if you’ve only used cannabis once, but daily users may test positive for 21 to 30 days after their last use. The exact timeline depends on how often you use, what type of test you’re facing, and how your body stores and processes fat.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Different drug tests look for THC or its byproducts in different parts of your body, and each has its own detection window.
Urine tests are the most common, especially for employment screening. They can detect THC byproducts for roughly 1 to 30 days after use. A first-time user will typically test clean within 3 to 4 days. Someone who smokes three or four times a week can expect a window of 5 to 7 days. Daily or near-daily users face the longest window, potentially 30 days or more, though research from the Drug Court Review found that even chronic users generally test negative within 21 days at the more sensitive cutoff levels.
Saliva tests have the shortest window. Cannabis is typically detectable in saliva for about 24 hours, though some evidence suggests THC from smoking can show up for as long as 30 hours. These tests are increasingly used in roadside checks.
Blood tests detect THC itself for only a few hours after use, making them a poor indicator of anything other than very recent consumption. Regular users, however, can have low levels of THC circulating in their blood for potentially weeks after stopping, because of the way THC gets stored in body fat and slowly released.
Hair tests are the most sensitive, detecting THC byproducts for up to 90 days. These are less common but sometimes used for pre-employment screening in certain industries.
What Drug Tests Actually Measure
Most standard drug tests don’t look for THC itself. They look for a byproduct your liver creates when it breaks THC down: a compound called THC-COOH. Your liver first converts THC into an active form that still has psychoactive effects, then further breaks it down into THC-COOH, which is inactive but sticks around in your body much longer than THC does. This is the molecule urine tests are designed to catch.
The standard screening threshold for workplace and federal urine tests is 50 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). If your sample falls below that, you pass. If it hits that level or above, the lab runs a more sensitive confirmatory test with a cutoff of 15 ng/mL. This two-step process means a faint trace might clear the initial screen but could still show up on confirmation, which is why timelines can vary depending on which cutoff applies.
Why Frequency of Use Matters So Much
The single biggest factor in how long THC stays detectable is how often you use cannabis. This isn’t just about how much THC you’ve consumed in total. It’s about how deeply THC has accumulated in your fat tissue over time.
THC is highly fat-soluble. When you use cannabis, your body absorbs THC quickly, but instead of flushing it all out, it tucks a significant portion into fat cells. A single use deposits a small amount that clears within days. But repeated use builds up a reservoir. One study found detectable THC in human fat biopsies 28 days after the last cannabis exposure. As your body gradually metabolizes that fat, THC seeps back into your bloodstream and eventually gets converted into the testable byproduct that shows up in urine.
In one study of chronic users, eight out of ten subjects tested below the standard 50 ng/mL cutoff after an average of 13 days, with a range of 5 to 19 days. At the more sensitive 20 ng/mL cutoff, the longest anyone tested positive was just over 18 days, with the average being about 5 days. So even for heavy users, the often-cited “30 days” figure represents an upper bound rather than the norm.
How Body Fat Affects Clearance
Because THC parks itself in fat tissue, your body composition plays a real role in how quickly you clear it. People with higher body fat percentages have more storage capacity for THC, which means more of it can accumulate and more time is needed to release and process it all. Research has confirmed that the connection between body mass index and THC clearance is measurable, not just theoretical.
This also creates a counterintuitive effect with exercise. Working out burns fat, which sounds like it should help clear THC faster. But burning fat releases stored THC back into your bloodstream. A study of regular cannabis users found that exercise caused a temporary spike in blood THC levels, and the spike was larger in people with higher BMIs. So while long-term fitness may help your body process THC over weeks, exercising in the days right before a drug test could actually raise your THC levels temporarily rather than lower them.
Do Detox Methods Actually Work?
The short answer: not in any reliable, fast-acting way. The popular strategies people try, including heavy water intake, sweating, exercise, and various “detox” products, don’t hold up well under scrutiny.
Drinking large amounts of water can dilute your urine, which might lower the concentration of THC byproducts below the test threshold. But labs are aware of this. Excessively diluted samples look abnormal, and technicians will flag them as suspicious. A flagged sample typically means you’ll need to retest, which just delays things.
Sweating expels only a tiny fraction of THC byproducts compared to what your body eliminates through urine and feces. It’s not a meaningful detox pathway. And as noted above, exercise can temporarily increase blood THC rather than decrease it, potentially backfiring if you’re tested soon after a workout.
The most reliable way to clear a drug test is time. Your body eliminates THC byproducts at its own pace, driven primarily by your metabolism, body fat levels, and how much THC has accumulated from prior use.
Breath Testing Is Still in Development
Cannabis breathalyzers are a concept many people have heard about, but they don’t yet work the way alcohol breathalyzers do. THC is a much larger, less volatile molecule than alcohol, and it shows up in breath at concentrations hundreds of times lower. This makes detection far more technically challenging.
Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology recently demonstrated the first successful detection of THC in breath from edibles, not just smoked cannabis. They found that multiple breath measurements over time could potentially indicate recent use. But regular cannabis users can have THC in their breath for at least eight hours after stopping, and no standardized testing protocols exist yet. For now, breath-based THC testing remains experimental and is not used in workplace or legal screening.
