So if you have three shots, it takes roughly three hours for your body to fully metabolize the alcohol. But “staying in your system” depends on what kind of test you’re talking about, because different tests can pick up traces of alcohol long after you feel sober.
Detection Times by Test Type
The window for detecting alcohol varies dramatically depending on what’s being tested:
- Blood: Up to about 12 hours after your last drink.
- Breath: A breathalyzer can detect alcohol for 12 to 24 hours, depending on how much you drank.

The EtG urine test is worth understanding because it catches people off guard. It doesn’t look for alcohol itself but for a metabolite your body produces while breaking alcohol down. That’s why it has such a long detection window compared to a standard urine screen.
How Your Body Breaks Down Vodka
Your liver does the heavy lifting. It uses an enzyme to convert ethanol into a toxic compound called acetaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. Fortunately, acetaldehyde doesn’t stick around long. A second enzyme quickly converts it into acetate, which your body then breaks down into water and carbon dioxide for easy elimination.
This process happens at a fixed rate. Your liver can only handle about one standard drink per hour regardless of your intentions. Coffee, cold showers, and exercise don’t speed it up. Time is the only thing that clears alcohol from your system.
When you drink heavily, a backup system kicks in to help. An additional enzyme becomes active only after large amounts of alcohol have been consumed. But even with this extra pathway, the overall rate doesn’t increase dramatically.

Age slows things down. Older adults metabolize alcohol less efficiently, partly because liver function declines and body composition shifts over time.
How Food Changes the Timeline
Eating before you drink makes a real difference, and the data is striking. When people drink on a full stomach, only about 66 to 71% of the alcohol becomes available for absorption compared to drinking while fasting. That means a meaningful portion of the alcohol you consume never reaches your bloodstream at the same concentration it otherwise would.
Drinking on an empty stomach produces peak blood alcohol levels around 30 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath, while drinking after a meal drops that peak to about 21. Food also causes blood alcohol to peak faster and begin declining sooner, so the total time alcohol spends in your system at elevated levels is shorter. A snack helps somewhat, but a full meal has the most pronounced effect.
Practical Timelines for Common Scenarios
Here’s what the math looks like in real situations. If you have two vodka shots (two standard drinks) at 9 p.m., your liver needs roughly two hours to metabolize the alcohol. By 11 p.m., your blood alcohol should be near zero under typical conditions. But a breathalyzer could still register trace amounts for several more hours, and an EtG urine test could detect metabolites for two full days.
If you have five or six drinks over the course of an evening, you’re looking at five to six hours of active metabolism. A night of heavy drinking that ends at midnight might not clear your blood until the following morning, and your breath could test positive into the afternoon. An EtG test could flag you three days later.
These timelines assume average metabolism. If you’re smaller, older, female, or drinking on an empty stomach, the process takes longer. If you’re larger, well-fed, and a moderate drinker, you may clear alcohol slightly faster than average. But the differences amount to maybe 20 to 30% in either direction, not hours and hours of variation for the same amount of alcohol.
