THC can stay detectable in your body for anywhere from one day to five weeks or more, depending on how often you use it and what type of test you’re facing. That enormous range exists because THC behaves differently from most other substances: it dissolves into fat tissue and slowly trickles back into your bloodstream over days or weeks, long after the high has worn off.
Why THC Lingers So Long
When you consume cannabis, your liver breaks THC down into over 100 different byproducts. The one that matters most for drug testing is an inactive compound called THC-COOH. Unlike alcohol or stimulants that dissolve in water and flush out relatively quickly, THC and its byproducts are fat-soluble. They get absorbed into fat cells throughout your body, then slowly release back into your bloodstream over time. Your body eventually eliminates about 65% through stool and 20% through urine.
This slow-release process is why a heavy, long-term user can test positive for 30 days or longer after quitting. The more fat tissue storing THC byproducts, the longer the trickle continues. In extreme cases, people have tested positive at meaningful concentrations more than two months after their last use.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Urine Tests
Urine testing is the most common method for workplace and legal screening. Most standard tests use a cutoff of 50 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL), which is the federal threshold for an initial screen. If that comes back positive, a confirmatory test at a lower cutoff of 15 ng/mL follows.
At the standard 50 ng/mL cutoff, here’s roughly what to expect:
- Single or occasional use: 3 to 4 days
- Moderate use (a few times per week): up to 10 days after the last session
- Daily or chronic use: 21 to 30 days, sometimes longer
If the test uses the stricter 20 ng/mL cutoff, those windows stretch. A single use could show up for about 7 days, and regular users might test positive for up to 21 days. The overall range, from a single puff to years of daily use, spans roughly 1 day to 5 weeks.
Blood Tests
Blood tests detect active THC rather than its long-lived byproducts, so the detection window is much shorter. THC levels in blood spike within minutes of inhaling and drop rapidly over the next few hours. For occasional users, blood tests typically come back negative within a day or two. For frequent users, THC can remain detectable in blood for several days, partly because fat stores keep releasing small amounts back into circulation.
Saliva Tests
Oral fluid tests are common in roadside screening and some workplace settings. They detect THC itself (not the metabolite) at a cutoff of 4 ng/mL for an initial screen. Cannabis is generally detectable in saliva for up to 24 hours after use, making this the shortest detection window of any standard test. Heavy users may test positive slightly longer, but saliva tests are primarily designed to catch very recent use.
Hair Tests
Hair follicle tests have the longest look-back period: up to 3 months. As THC byproducts circulate in your blood, trace amounts get deposited into the hair shaft as it grows. A standard test takes a 1.5-inch sample from the scalp, which represents roughly 90 days of growth. Hair tests are less common for pre-employment screening but are used when an employer or court wants to identify a pattern of use over time rather than a single recent event.
Factors That Shift Your Timeline
The ranges above are averages. Several personal factors push you toward the shorter or longer end.
Frequency and quantity matter most. Someone who took a single hit at a party is in a completely different situation from someone who uses daily. Chronic use builds up a large reservoir of THC byproducts in fat tissue, and that reservoir takes weeks to fully drain.
Body fat percentage plays a direct role because THC stores in fat. Two people who smoke the same amount can have meaningfully different detection windows based on body composition alone. Higher body fat generally means a longer window.
Metabolism and hydration also contribute. A faster metabolic rate processes stored THC more quickly, and staying well-hydrated keeps urine from becoming overly concentrated (which can push borderline samples above the cutoff). That said, drinking excessive water right before a test can produce a dilute sample, which many labs flag as inconclusive and require a retest.
Potency of the product matters too. Today’s cannabis products vary enormously in THC concentration, from low-potency flower around 10% to concentrates above 80%. Higher doses deposit more THC into your system, extending clearance time.
Exercise Can Temporarily Raise THC Levels
This one catches people off guard. A study published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence showed that moderate exercise on a stationary bike caused a small but statistically significant spike in blood THC levels among regular cannabis users. The mechanism is straightforward: exercise breaks down fat cells (a process called lipolysis), and that releases stored THC back into the bloodstream. The increase was modest, but it means that intense exercise right before a blood or urine test could theoretically work against you rather than help. If you’re trying to clear THC before a test, the physical activity is better done well in advance, not the day before.
CBD Products and Positive Tests
If you use CBD products but not cannabis, you might assume you’re safe from a positive THC test. That’s not always true. Hemp-derived CBD products can legally contain up to 0.3% THC, and regular use can cause those trace amounts to accumulate. Independent lab analyses and FDA reports have found some CBD products containing significantly more THC than the legal limit or what was listed on the label. Delta-8 THC products, which are often derived from hemp CBD, add another layer of risk since they do contain a psychoactive form of THC that can trigger a positive result. If passing a drug test matters to you, full-spectrum CBD products carry real risk.
Federal Workplace Testing Still Includes Cannabis
Despite shifting public attitudes and state-level legalization, federal drug testing requirements have not changed. As of late 2025, marijuana remains part of the standard testing panel for safety-sensitive positions regulated by the Department of Transportation. Even with an executive order directing rescheduling from Schedule I to Schedule III, the DOT has stated that its testing process and regulations remain unchanged until that process is complete. Private employers in many states also continue to test for THC, though some states have passed laws restricting employers from penalizing off-duty cannabis use.
The practical takeaway: if you’re subject to workplace drug testing, the legal status of cannabis in your state doesn’t necessarily protect you. The detection windows above are what determine your risk, and for frequent users, those windows are measured in weeks, not days.
