THC, the active compound in marijuana, can stay detectable in your system anywhere from 3 days to 90 days depending on how often you use it and which type of drug test is administered. For most people facing a standard urine test, the window falls between 3 and 30 days. The wide range comes down to a few key factors: how frequently you consume cannabis, your body composition, and the sensitivity of the test itself.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Not all drug tests measure the same thing or look back the same distance in time. Urine tests, the most common type used by employers, detect a byproduct your body creates as it breaks down THC. Blood and saliva tests detect THC itself, which clears much faster. Hair tests work differently altogether, trapping drug compounds inside the hair strand as it grows.
Urine tests can detect cannabis for roughly 1 to 30 days after use. If you’ve smoked once, expect a detection window of about 3 days. Smoking three or four times a week extends that to 5 to 7 days. Daily or near-daily users can test positive for 30 days or longer, because the byproduct builds up in the body faster than it can be eliminated.
Saliva tests have the shortest useful window. Cannabis is typically detectable in saliva for up to 24 hours, though some evidence suggests THC from smoking can show up for as long as 30 hours. These tests are most often used in roadside checks or situations where recent use is the concern.
Blood tests detect active THC for only a few hours after use. They’re rarely used for employment screening but may come up in medical or legal contexts where the question is whether someone used cannabis very recently.
Hair tests are the most sensitive, detecting use for up to 90 days. Head hair grows about half an inch per month on average, so a standard 1.5-inch sample covers roughly three months. Drug compounds get embedded into the hair strand from the bloodstream, which means a hair test won’t catch use from the last week or so, since the hair containing those compounds hasn’t grown above the scalp yet.
Sweat tests are uncommon but sometimes used in monitoring programs. Cannabis may be detectable in sweat for 7 to 14 days.
Why Frequency of Use Matters So Much
THC behaves differently from most other substances your body processes. It’s fat-soluble, meaning your body stores it in fatty tissues rather than flushing it quickly through your kidneys. After a single use, there’s only a small amount to store and then gradually release. But with repeated use, your body accumulates THC and its byproducts in fat faster than it can clear them out. This is why a daily user can test positive weeks after stopping, while a first-time user clears the same test in days.
This fat storage also explains why cannabis has a much longer detection window than many other substances. Your body slowly releases stored THC back into the bloodstream over time, where it gets broken down and eventually excreted in urine. The more you’ve used and the longer you’ve been using, the deeper that reservoir.
Edibles vs. Smoking: Different Timelines
How you consume cannabis changes the speed at which THC enters and exits your bloodstream. Research from the National Institute of Justice found notable differences between inhaling and eating THC. After vaping, THC peaks in the blood almost immediately and its byproduct peaks in urine around 4 hours later. After eating an edible, THC takes about 2 hours to peak in blood, and the byproduct doesn’t peak in urine until around 6 hours later.
Edibles also produced significantly higher concentrations of the byproduct in urine. In one study, a 25 mg oral dose produced urine concentrations about three times higher than a 20 mg vaped dose. This means edibles could, in some cases, extend your detection window compared to smoking or vaping a similar amount.
Other Factors That Affect Detection Time
Beyond frequency and method of use, several biological variables influence how long THC stays detectable in your body.
- Body fat percentage: Because THC is stored in fat, people with higher body fat may retain it longer. Two people who use the same amount of cannabis can have meaningfully different detection windows based on body composition alone.
- Metabolism: A faster metabolic rate breaks down THC more quickly, shortening the detection window. This varies from person to person and isn’t something you can easily measure or control.
- Dose: Higher doses deposit more THC into your system, giving your body more to process and extending the time it takes to clear.
- Hydration: While drinking water won’t speed up THC metabolism, hydration levels affect how concentrated your urine is. Heavily diluted urine may fall below the test threshold, and very concentrated urine may push a borderline result over it.
What Drug Tests Actually Measure
Standard urine drug tests don’t look for THC itself. They detect a specific byproduct your liver creates when it breaks down THC. This byproduct lingers in the body far longer than active THC does, which is why urine tests have a much wider detection window than blood tests.
The standard threshold for a positive result on a urine marijuana test is 50 nanograms per milliliter. If the amount in your sample falls below that cutoff, the test reports negative, even if trace amounts are present. This threshold was set in part to avoid flagging incidental exposure. Research from the CDC found that passive inhalation of marijuana smoke by a nonuser is unlikely to produce a positive result at standard cutoff levels.
Federal workplace testing guidelines were updated in early 2025, primarily to refine how labs distinguish marijuana compounds from similar molecules like delta-8 THC. The new standards, effective July 2025, don’t change the detection window but do tighten the specificity of what labs report.
Realistic Timelines for Common Situations
If you used cannabis once or twice and have an upcoming urine test, you’re likely clear within 3 to 5 days. If you’re a weekend user (a few times per week), plan for at least a full week. If you’ve been using daily for months, 30 days is a reasonable minimum, and some heavy, long-term users report needing 6 weeks or more to consistently test negative.
For a saliva test, even regular users are generally clear within a day or two of their last use. For a hair test, there’s no shortcut: the only thing that moves the detection window is time, since the 90-day record is physically embedded in the strand. Blood tests are the least concerning for anyone who hasn’t used in the past several hours.
