Why THC Lingers Longer Than Other Drugs

Most recreational drugs dissolve in water, which means your body flushes them out relatively quickly through urine. THC works differently. It’s fat-soluble, so after you consume cannabis, THC molecules bind to fat cells throughout your body. Over the following days and weeks, those fat cells slowly release THC back into your bloodstream, where your liver breaks it down into a metabolite called THC-COOH. The metabolite’s half-life, the time it takes for half of it to leave your body, is roughly 30 hours after a single use. But with a longer observation window, researchers at Johns Hopkins found that half-life stretched to 44 to 60 hours. How you consume cannabis affects how quickly THC enters your system and how long it stays. When you smoke or vape, THC passes through your lungs and hits your bloodstream almost immediately. When you eat an edible, THC is absorbed through your digestive tract and processed by your liver first, which means it enters your bloodstream more slowly and the effects last longer.

This slower absorption also means your body produces metabolites over a more extended period. After eating an edible, you can generally expect THC metabolites to show up in urine for up to a week from a single use, longer if you consume edibles regularly. Drug tests detect the same metabolite regardless of how THC entered your body, so edibles don’t give you any advantage on a screening. If anything, the prolonged metabolism works against you.
