Zorbium provides pain relief in cats for 4 days (96 hours) from a single application. It’s a topical solution applied to the skin at the base of a cat’s neck, and it’s the first FDA-approved transdermal pain medication of its kind for cats. It is specifically approved for controlling postoperative pain after surgical procedures.
How the 4-Day Pain Relief Works
Zorbium contains buprenorphine, an opioid pain reliever. When a veterinarian applies the solution to the skin at the back of a cat’s neck, it absorbs rapidly into the deeper layers of skin, forming a reservoir. From there, the drug releases steadily into the bloodstream over a period of days. Pain relief begins within 1 to 2 hours of application and continues for the full 96-hour window.
This makes Zorbium especially practical for post-surgical recovery. Rather than requiring repeated injections or oral doses (which can be notoriously difficult with cats), one application before or around the time of surgery covers the most critical days of healing. Clinical trials evaluated pain control at regular intervals through the entire 96-hour period.
What Your Cat May Act Like After Application
Because Zorbium is an opioid, it can cause some noticeable behavioral changes. In safety studies, cats commonly experienced euphoria, mild mood changes (dysphoria), and dilated pupils. These effects typically peaked within 1 to 2 hours after application, which lines up with when the drug first reaches effective levels in the bloodstream.
Euphoria in some cats persisted for 36 to 72 hours. This can look like unusual friendliness, purring, kneading, or a slightly “spaced out” demeanor. Mild sedation was also reported in about 10.6% of cats receiving Zorbium in clinical trials, compared to 6.4% of cats that received a placebo. These behavioral effects are generally mild and resolve on their own as the drug clears the body.
Safety Precautions for People at Home
Zorbium is applied only by a veterinarian in a clinical setting, not dispensed for home use. However, because the solution sits on and within the skin at the application site, there are important precautions for anyone handling the cat afterward.
After application, wait a minimum of 30 minutes before making direct contact with the application site. Even after drying, the area contains buprenorphine, which can absorb through human skin, eyes, or mucous membranes. This is a serious concern: accidental exposure to even one tube of Zorbium can cause life-threatening breathing problems in humans, and it can be fatal in children. If your skin touches the application area, wash immediately with soap and water.
The risk is elevated for anyone also taking sedatives, anti-anxiety medications, or drinking alcohol, as combining these with opioid exposure can cause dangerous sedation and respiratory depression. Be particularly careful if young children interact with your cat during the days following surgery.
Why Only for Surgical Pain
Zorbium is FDA-approved specifically for postoperative pain, not for chronic conditions like arthritis or cancer-related discomfort. Its 4-day duration aligns well with the acute pain window after common feline surgeries such as spays, neuters, dental extractions, or orthopedic procedures. If your cat needs longer-term pain management, your vet will typically transition to other medications once the Zorbium window closes.
Because it is a controlled opioid substance, Zorbium is not something you can request or administer at home. Your veterinary team applies it in the clinic, usually on the day of surgery, and monitors your cat during the initial drying period before discharge.
