Overstimulation vs. Tiredness

Sometimes what looks like tiredness is actually overstimulation, and the two require different responses. An overstimulated baby will look away from you as if upset, clench their fists, wave their arms and legs in agitated movements, and become increasingly difficult to soothe or distract. A tired baby, by contrast, tends to get quieter and less engaged before becoming fussy.

If your 3-week-old starts yawning at 35 minutes, don’t try to stretch to an hour just because the chart says you can.
