Immunocompromised People Stay Contagious Longer
If your immune system is weakened by conditions like cancer treatment, organ transplantation, or certain autoimmune medications, your body may take much longer to clear live virus. COVID spreads primarily through respiratory droplets and smaller airborne particles, not by touching contaminated surfaces. When someone with COVID has been in an indoor space, the virus can hang in the air for minutes to hours depending on ventilation, humidity, and how much virus the person was shedding. Good airflow shortens that window considerably.
Surface contamination is a much smaller risk. On porous materials like cardboard or fabric, live virus becomes undetectable within minutes to hours. On hard surfaces like plastic, steel, or glass, viable virus can persist longer, but a 99% reduction in infectious particles typically occurs within 72 hours under normal indoor conditions. After three days, the risk of picking up COVID from a surface is minimal regardless of cleaning. The real concern is sharing air with a contagious person, not touching what they touched.
What Affects How Long You’re Contagious
