Breast milk stays good in the freezer for up to 12 months, but using it within 6 months gives your baby the best quality. The freezer needs to be at 0°F (-18°C) or colder for these timelines to apply. These guidelines, adapted from the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine, apply to freshly expressed or pumped milk stored in a standard home freezer.
6 Months vs. 12 Months: What Changes
The 6-month mark is the sweet spot. Up to that point, frozen breast milk retains its nutritional value and protective properties with minimal change. Between 6 and 12 months, the milk is still safe, but quality gradually declines. Fat content, certain vitamins, and some of the immune-boosting components begin to break down over time.
A study published in The Journal of Pediatrics found that breast milk stored at freezer temperatures for 9 months preserved key macronutrients and immune-active components. Bacterial counts actually decreased significantly over that period, meaning the milk didn’t become less safe from a bacterial standpoint. What does shift is the pH, which drops over months of storage. This acidity change can affect taste and is one reason earlier use is preferred.
If you’re building a freezer stash while on maternity leave, label every bag with the date you pumped it and rotate through oldest bags first.
Where You Store It Matters
Temperature consistency is the most important factor. The back of the freezer stays coldest and most stable. Every time you open the freezer door, the temperature near the front rises briefly. Storing breast milk near the door or in a door compartment exposes it to repeated temperature swings that can degrade quality faster than the guidelines assume.
If your freezer is a small compartment inside your refrigerator (the kind with a single exterior door), it typically doesn’t maintain 0°F as reliably as a standalone or full-size freezer. In those units, aim to use frozen milk sooner rather than pushing toward the 12-month limit. A standalone deep freezer provides the most stable environment.
How to Thaw Frozen Breast Milk Safely
You have three options for thawing: in the refrigerator overnight, under lukewarm running water, or in a container of warm water. Never use a microwave, which heats unevenly and can create hot spots that burn your baby’s mouth and destroy beneficial components in the milk.
Once breast milk is completely thawed in the refrigerator, use it within 24 hours. That 24-hour clock starts when the milk is fully liquid, not when you move it from the freezer to the fridge. If you thaw it under warm water and bring it closer to room temperature, use it within 2 hours.
Never refreeze breast milk after it has thawed. Once thawed, bacterial growth resumes at a pace that refreezing won’t reverse. The one exception involves power outages: if frozen breast milk has started to thaw but still contains visible ice crystals, it can be refrozen. Ice crystals mean the milk never fully left frozen temperatures.
When Frozen Milk Smells Soapy or Metallic
Some parents thaw a carefully stored bag of milk only to find it smells soapy, metallic, or just “off.” This is almost always caused by lipase, a naturally occurring enzyme in breast milk that breaks down fat. All breast milk contains lipase, but some people produce it in higher amounts. As the milk sits at cold temperatures, the enzyme keeps working, and the longer it’s stored, the stronger the taste change becomes.
The milk is still safe to drink. Many babies don’t care about the taste at all. But if your baby refuses it, you can prevent the issue in future batches by scalding the milk before freezing. Heat it in a pan to 180°F (you’ll see small bubbles forming around the edges, but don’t let it boil), then cool it quickly and freeze. Scalding deactivates the lipase. It does reduce some immune properties, but the milk still provides excellent nutrition.
If you suspect you have high lipase activity, test it early. Freeze a small amount for a few days, thaw it, and smell it before committing your entire supply to the freezer without scalding.
Best Practices for Freezing
- Use freezer-safe containers. Breast milk storage bags designed for freezing, or BPA-free hard plastic containers with tight lids, work best. Regular bottle liners or thin plastic bags can crack.
- Leave room for expansion. Breast milk expands as it freezes. Fill bags or containers about three-quarters full to prevent bursting.
- Store in small portions. Freezing in 2- to 4-ounce portions reduces waste, since you can’t refreeze anything your baby doesn’t finish.
- Flatten bags before freezing. Laying bags flat creates thin, uniform slabs that freeze faster and thaw more quickly than rounded pouches. Once solid, they also stack neatly.
- Label clearly. Write the date and amount on every bag. If your baby is in daycare, add their name.
What Happens After a Power Outage
A full, tightly packed freezer holds its temperature for roughly 48 hours without power if you keep the door closed. A half-full freezer holds for about 24 hours. During an outage, resist the urge to check on your milk, since every door opening lets cold air escape.
After power returns, check the milk. If ice crystals are still visible in the bags, the milk can be refrozen safely. If the milk is completely thawed and feels refrigerator-cold, move it to the fridge and use it within 24 hours. If it has been sitting at room temperature or feels warm, discard it.
