How Long Is Formula Good After Heating: 1-Hour Rule

Heated infant formula is safe for up to 2 hours from the moment you warm it, as long as your baby hasn’t started drinking from the bottle yet. Once your baby’s lips touch the bottle, that window shrinks to 1 hour. After either limit, the formula should be thrown away.

The Two Timers That Matter

There are two separate clocks running once formula is warmed, and the one that matters depends on whether feeding has started.

  • Warmed but untouched: Use within 2 hours of preparation. This applies whether you mixed powdered formula with warm water or heated a ready-to-feed bottle.
  • Baby has started drinking: Use within 1 hour from when the feeding begins, then discard whatever is left.

These guidelines come from the CDC and apply to all types of infant formula: powdered, concentrated liquid, and ready-to-feed. There is no version that gets a longer window once it’s been warmed.

Why the Clock Starts Ticking

Warm formula is an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply. Formula is rich in protein and sugar, and heating it brings the temperature into the range where bacteria thrive. At room temperature or slightly above, bacterial counts can double roughly every 20 minutes.

The risk increases significantly once your baby drinks from the bottle. Saliva introduces bacteria from your baby’s mouth directly into the formula, and those bacteria begin multiplying immediately in the warm, nutrient-rich liquid. This is why leftover formula in a bottle your baby has used should always be discarded, even if the 1-hour mark hasn’t passed and the bottle still looks full. The combination of saliva and formula creates conditions that no amount of refrigeration can reliably reverse.

One pathogen of particular concern is Cronobacter, a rare but serious bacterium that can contaminate powdered formula. For high-risk infants (premature babies or those with weakened immune systems), the FDA recommends mixing powdered formula with water heated to at least 158°F (70°C) to help kill Cronobacter before cooling the bottle to body temperature for feeding.

Can You Refrigerate or Reheat Warmed Formula?

If you warmed a bottle and your baby never drank from it, you might wonder whether you can pop it back in the fridge. The safest practice is no. Once formula has been brought up to a warm temperature, putting it back in the refrigerator doesn’t reset the 2-hour clock. Bacteria that began growing during the warm period don’t die when chilled; they simply slow down. Rewarming that bottle later gives them a second opportunity to multiply rapidly.

Reheating formula that your baby has already partially consumed is never recommended. The saliva already in the bottle means bacterial growth is well underway, and a second round of warming accelerates it further.

Warming Formula Safely

The safest way to warm a bottle is to place it in a bowl of warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes or use a bottle warmer. Swirl the bottle gently to distribute the heat evenly, then test the temperature by dropping a few drops on the inside of your wrist. It should feel lukewarm, close to body temperature (around 98.6°F).

Microwaving is not recommended. Microwaves heat unevenly, creating hot spots in the liquid that can scald your baby’s mouth even when the outside of the bottle feels fine. Some specialty and metabolic formulas also carry warnings against heating above 100°F because higher temperatures can destroy vitamins and nutrients in those specific products. Always check the label on your formula’s packaging.

Practical Tips to Reduce Waste

Formula isn’t cheap, and pouring it down the drain feels frustrating. A few small adjustments can help. Start by preparing smaller bottles if your baby doesn’t always finish a full feeding. It’s easier to warm a second small bottle than to throw away two ounces from a large one. If you’re heading out, bring the powder and water separately and mix when your baby shows hunger cues rather than pre-warming a bottle that may sit in a diaper bag too long.

For nighttime feedings, you can keep pre-measured water at room temperature and pre-portioned powder beside each other so mixing takes seconds. Many babies accept room-temperature formula just fine, which eliminates the warming step entirely and simplifies the timeline. If your baby doesn’t mind it, there’s no nutritional reason formula needs to be warmed at all.
