According to the CDC, most healthy adults with the flu can spread the virus starting one day before symptoms appear and up to five to seven days after getting sick. That means you could be contagious before you even know you’re ill, and you remain infectious for roughly a week after symptoms begin.
The Standard Contagious Window
The timeline breaks down into two phases. First, there’s a pre-symptomatic phase: you can pass the virus to others about 24 hours before your first symptom shows up. This is one reason the flu spreads so effectively. People go about their normal routines, feeling fine, while already shedding the virus through talking, coughing, and touching shared surfaces.
Once symptoms hit, you remain contagious for roughly five to seven days. Your infectiousness peaks during the first three to four days of illness, especially if you have a fever. As your immune system gains control and symptoms improve, the amount of virus you shed drops steadily. By day five to seven, most adults are no longer spreading the virus in meaningful amounts.
Children Stay Contagious Longer
Young children and infants tend to shed the flu virus for longer than adults. Their immune systems are less experienced with influenza, so it takes more time to clear the infection. In practice, this means kids can remain contagious beyond the standard seven-day window. This extended shedding is one reason flu spreads so rapidly through daycares and schools, where close contact is constant and hand hygiene is inconsistent.
Immunocompromised Individuals
People with weakened immune systems, such as those who’ve had organ or bone marrow transplants, or who are undergoing chemotherapy, can shed the flu virus for dramatically longer periods. In some documented cases, immunocompromised patients have shed influenza from their respiratory tract for over a year and a half, even while receiving antiviral treatment. These cases are rare, but they highlight that the standard five-to-seven-day window doesn’t apply to everyone. Prolonged shedding in these patients also raises the risk of the virus developing resistance to antiviral medications.
Spreading the Flu Without Symptoms
Some people get infected with the flu and never develop noticeable symptoms, yet they can still pass the virus to close contacts. Research compiled from several household transmission studies shows that asymptomatic infections do produce detectable viral shedding, though it tends to be lower in concentration and shorter in duration than in people who feel sick. Most asymptomatic shedding lasts three days or fewer. This makes asymptomatic spread less efficient than transmission from a visibly ill person, but it still contributes to how the virus moves through communities, particularly in households and other close-contact settings.
How the Virus Spreads Between People
Flu primarily travels through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people nearby, or be inhaled into the lungs. Surface transmission plays a secondary role: the virus can survive on hard surfaces for several hours, and you can pick it up by touching a contaminated doorknob or phone and then touching your face. Fabric surfaces tend to inactivate the virus faster than hard, nonporous ones like stainless steel or plastic.
When You Can Safely Return to Normal Activities
The CDC updated its respiratory virus guidance in March 2024, simplifying the criteria for returning to work, school, and other activities. The rule is straightforward: you can go back to normal when your symptoms have been improving overall for at least 24 hours, and if you had a fever, it’s been gone for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Both conditions need to be met at the same time.
For children specifically, the CDC advises the same two-part test before returning to school: no fever for 24 hours without medication, and respiratory symptoms trending better for at least 24 hours. Keep in mind that meeting these criteria means you’re less likely to be highly contagious, but it doesn’t guarantee you’ve stopped shedding the virus entirely. Some low-level shedding can continue, which is why basic precautions like hand washing and covering coughs still matter in the days after you feel better.
Why the First Few Days Matter Most
If you’re trying to protect the people around you, the most critical window is the first three to four days after symptoms start. This is when viral load peaks and transmission risk is highest, particularly while you still have a fever. Staying home during this period does the most to prevent spreading the flu to coworkers, classmates, or vulnerable family members. The day before symptoms appear is also high-risk, but since you don’t know you’re sick yet, that window is essentially impossible to control. This is why annual flu vaccination remains the most practical way to limit spread at the population level: it reduces the chance of infection in the first place, eliminating that invisible pre-symptomatic window.
