Ketamine is detectable in your body for as little as 24 hours or as long as 4 months, depending on the type of test. The drug’s active effects wear off within one to two hours, but its byproducts linger far longer. Blood tests have the shortest detection window, while hair tests can reveal use months later.
Detection Windows by Test Type
Different tests look for ketamine (or the compounds your body converts it into) in different biological samples. Each has its own window of reliability:

These are upper limits. For someone who used ketamine once at a low dose, urine detection may only last a few days. Heavier or repeated use pushes detection times toward the longer end of each range.
Ketamine and Standard Drug Tests
Standard workplace drug screens, including the common 5-panel and 10-panel tests, do not test for ketamine. These panels screen for substances like cannabis, cocaine, opioids, amphetamines, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, PCP, and MDMA. Ketamine will only show up if the testing party specifically orders a ketamine panel, which is relatively uncommon in routine employment screening. Specialized tests are more likely in clinical, forensic, or military settings.
How Your Body Breaks Down Ketamine

For the prescription nasal spray form of ketamine (esketamine, sold as Spravato), blood levels drop quickly in the first 2 to 4 hours after a dose, then taper off more slowly with a half-life of 7 to 12 hours. That means it takes roughly 1 to 3 days for the drug and its main byproduct to fully clear your blood, which aligns with the general detection windows above.
How the Method of Use Affects Timing
The way ketamine enters your body changes how fast it hits peak levels and how much of the dose actually reaches your bloodstream. Both of these factors influence how long it stays detectable.
Intravenous (IV) ketamine has 100% bioavailability, meaning every bit of the dose reaches your blood. It peaks within about a minute. Intramuscular injection is nearly as efficient at 93% bioavailability, peaking around 5 minutes. These methods deliver the drug quickly and intensely, but the body also begins clearing it quickly because concentrations spike and then fall.
Oral, sublingual (under the tongue), and suppository forms have much lower bioavailability. A larger portion of the dose gets broken down in the liver before it ever reaches full circulation. The effects feel less intense, but the liver is processing ketamine for a longer stretch of time, which can extend how long breakdown products remain detectable in urine.
Factors That Extend or Shorten Detection
The ranges listed above are general guidelines. Several personal factors shift your actual clearance time in either direction.
Body fat matters because ketamine is somewhat fat-soluble. People with higher body fat percentages may store traces of the drug longer. Age plays a role too, since liver enzyme activity tends to slow down as you get older, meaning the drug takes longer to process. Kidney function affects how quickly breakdown products are filtered into urine and eliminated.
Frequency of use is one of the biggest variables. A single low dose may clear urine in a matter of days. Repeated or heavy use causes ketamine’s byproducts to accumulate, pushing urine detection closer to that 30-day ceiling. Hydration, overall metabolic rate, and whether you’re taking other medications that compete for the same liver enzymes can also influence timing.
How Long the Effects Actually Last
The subjective effects of ketamine are much shorter-lived than its detectability. When given intravenously, the dissociative and pain-relieving effects typically last 15 to 45 minutes. Intramuscular injection extends the experience to roughly 45 to 90 minutes. Oral forms can produce effects for 1 to 2 hours, though they come on more gradually and feel less intense.
After the main effects fade, many people experience residual grogginess, mild confusion, or coordination issues for a few hours.
