The 15-to-30-Second Standard

Static stretching and PNF stretching (where you alternate between contracting and relaxing a muscle while stretching it) are both more effective than dynamic stretching for building lasting flexibility. The key variable is total weekly volume. Stretching a muscle group for a few minutes every day, consistently over weeks, produces cumulative tissue changes that a few quick stretches before the gym never will.
