Why Mouthwash Right After Brushing Is a Problem

Standard adult toothpaste contains around 1,000 to 1,500 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride. Most over-the-counter mouthwashes, even fluoride ones, contain only 217 to 450 ppm, with 90% of products sitting in the 217 to 254 ppm range. When you rinse with mouthwash immediately after brushing, you’re replacing that high-concentration fluoride film with a much weaker solution.

A study published in the journal International Dental Journal measured what happens to fluoride levels in saliva under different post-brushing routines. People who rinsed with a non-fluoride mouthwash after brushing had significantly lower fluoride retention than those who simply spit out the toothpaste and left it alone. Even rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash reduced the overall concentration compared to not rinsing at all. The researchers concluded that using a non-fluoride mouthwash after brushing “may reduce the anticaries protection provided by toothbrushing with a fluoride toothpaste alone.”

The “Spit, Don’t Rinse” Method

The NHS, Public Health England, and the Australian Dental Association all recommend the same approach: after brushing, spit out the excess toothpaste but don’t rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. This keeps the fluoride concentration in your mouth as high as possible for as long as possible, giving it more time to strengthen your enamel.

This feels counterintuitive if you’ve spent years rinsing after brushing. The leftover toothpaste taste fades within a few minutes, and your teeth get far more protective benefit from that residual fluoride than from a clean rinse. If the texture or taste bothers you, using just a tiny sip of water to clear the worst of it is still better than a full rinse or mouthwash.

When to Use Mouthwash Instead

The best time to use mouthwash is at a completely separate point in your day, not attached to your brushing routine at all. After lunch is a good option, since most people brush in the morning and at night. Using mouthwash midday gives you an extra dose of fluoride (if you’re using a fluoride rinse) or antibacterial protection at a time when brushing isn’t practical.

After using a fluoride mouthwash, avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes. This is the same logic in reverse: you want the fluoride from the mouthwash to sit on your teeth without being washed away by food or liquid.

Does It Matter if the Mouthwash Has Fluoride?

It matters, but not in the way most people assume. A fluoride mouthwash used right after brushing is still a downgrade from the toothpaste layer it replaces, because the fluoride concentration is roughly four to six times lower. You’re trading strong protection for weaker protection.

A non-fluoride mouthwash right after brushing is worse. It strips away the fluoride entirely and replaces it with nothing protective. If the main reason you use mouthwash is for fresh breath or to target bacteria, those benefits are just as effective at a different time of day. You don’t lose anything by separating the two habits, and your teeth gain meaningful fluoride exposure they’d otherwise miss.

A Simple Routine That Works

The easiest way to get this right is to build mouthwash into a different moment entirely. A practical daily routine looks like this:

  • Morning: Brush for two minutes, spit, don’t rinse.
  • After lunch: Use mouthwash, then wait 30 minutes before eating or drinking.
  • Before bed: Brush for two minutes, spit, don’t rinse.

If you prefer mouthwash in the morning or evening, use it 30 minutes before you brush rather than after. This way the mouthwash freshens your breath and delivers its antibacterial or fluoride benefits without interfering with the more concentrated fluoride your toothpaste provides.
