How Long Until Alcohol Is Out of Your System?

Your liver clears alcohol at a fairly fixed rate of about one standard drink per hour. That means if you had three drinks, it takes roughly three hours for your blood alcohol level to return to zero. But “out of your system” depends on what you mean: alcohol itself disappears from your blood within hours, while byproducts of alcohol metabolism can linger for days or even months in hair.

What Counts as One Drink

The one-drink-per-hour rule only works if you know what a “standard drink” actually is, and most people overestimate. In the United States, one standard drink contains 0.6 ounces (14 grams) of pure alcohol. That translates to 12 ounces of regular beer at 5% alcohol, 5 ounces of wine at 12%, or a single 1.5-ounce shot of 80-proof liquor. A large glass of wine at a restaurant is often 8 or 9 ounces, which is closer to two drinks. A strong craft beer at 9% in a pint glass can count as nearly two as well.

Getting this math right matters. If you drink what feels like “two glasses of wine” but actually consumed four standard drinks’ worth of alcohol, your body needs closer to four hours, not two, to process it all.

How Your Body Breaks Down Alcohol

Almost all alcohol processing happens in the liver. Enzymes first convert ethanol into a toxic intermediate compound called acetaldehyde, which is a known carcinogen. A second set of enzymes quickly breaks acetaldehyde down into acetate, a relatively harmless substance that eventually becomes carbon dioxide and water. This assembly line runs at a steady pace, and your liver simply cannot be rushed.

When you drink faster than your liver can work, alcohol accumulates in your bloodstream. That’s what raises your blood alcohol concentration (BAC). Once you stop drinking, your BAC drops at a consistent rate as the liver catches up. The process is predictable enough that toxicologists can estimate backward from a BAC reading to figure out how much someone drank hours earlier.

Why the Timeline Varies From Person to Person

One drink per hour is an average, but several biological factors shift the number up or down. Body composition is one of the biggest. Alcohol dissolves in water, not fat, so people with more body water (generally those with more lean muscle mass) dilute alcohol across a larger volume, resulting in a lower peak BAC from the same number of drinks. Men typically have more body water than women of similar weight, which is one reason women tend to reach higher BAC levels from the same amount of alcohol.

Interestingly, when researchers account for differences in body composition, much of the gap between men and women narrows. Women actually have greater alcohol clearance per unit of lean body mass, partly because their liver size relative to lean mass is proportionally larger. The difference in how drunk you feel comes more from distribution volume than from how fast the liver works.

Food makes a significant difference in how quickly alcohol hits your bloodstream. Eating a meal before or while drinking slows the passage of alcohol from your stomach into your small intestine, where most absorption happens. In one study, food increased the proportion of alcohol absorbed through the stomach wall from 10% to 30% and dramatically slowed the rise in blood alcohol. A slower rise means your liver can process more alcohol before it accumulates, which lowers your peak BAC. You still metabolize the same total amount, but the peak is blunted and the overall timeline may feel shorter because you never get as intoxicated.

Detection Windows by Test Type

If your concern is a specific test, the detection window depends entirely on what’s being measured.

  • Blood tests can detect alcohol for up to 12 hours after your last drink. This reflects actual ethanol still circulating in your bloodstream.
  • Breath tests (breathalyzers) work for up to 24 hours in some cases, though 12 hours is more typical for moderate drinking. Breathalyzers measure alcohol vapor from your lungs, which correlates closely with blood levels.
  • Standard urine tests detect alcohol itself for roughly 12 to 24 hours, similar to blood.
  • EtG urine tests look for a metabolic byproduct rather than alcohol itself. After a few drinks, this byproduct can show up for 48 hours. Heavier drinking can push detection to 72 hours or longer.
  • Hair follicle tests have the longest window. Alcohol markers typically appear in hair for 1 to 6 months, though most testing covers a 90-day window since people regularly cut their hair.

EtG tests deserve special attention because they’re increasingly common in workplace, legal, and treatment monitoring settings. These tests are extremely sensitive, which makes them good at catching recent drinking but also means incidental alcohol exposure (certain mouthwashes, hand sanitizers, or fermented foods) can occasionally trigger a positive result at very low levels.

Nothing Speeds Up the Process

Coffee, cold showers, exercise, fresh air, greasy food: none of these remove alcohol from your system any faster. Your liver works at its own pace regardless of what you do after drinking. Coffee can partially reverse the sedative effects of alcohol, making you feel more alert, but your BAC stays exactly where it would have been without the coffee. This has been extensively studied, and the result is consistent. You may feel more awake, but you’re just as impaired.

Time is the only thing that lowers your blood alcohol level. If you’ve had five standard drinks and your last one was at midnight, your body needs until roughly 5 a.m. to clear the alcohol, assuming average metabolism. Many people underestimate this, especially when drinking late into the night. A BAC that’s still above the legal driving limit of 0.08% the next morning is more common than most people realize.

Practical Estimates by Drinking Level

Using the one-drink-per-hour baseline, here’s a rough guide to when alcohol clears your blood. Keep in mind that your liver starts working from the moment you begin drinking, so you don’t count from when you stop. If you drink three beers over two hours, your liver has already processed about two drinks’ worth by the time you finish, leaving roughly one hour after your last sip.

For heavier sessions, the math stacks up quickly. Six drinks consumed over three hours means your liver handled about three during that window, leaving three more hours of processing after you stop. Eight drinks over four hours means another four hours after your last drink. These are estimates for blood alcohol clearance only. If you’re facing an EtG test, add at least two full days to be safe regardless of how much you drank.

Individual variation means these numbers can shift by 20 to 30 percent in either direction. Chronic heavy drinkers sometimes develop a secondary metabolic pathway that kicks in at higher alcohol levels, which can modestly speed clearance. But relying on that adaptation is risky, and it comes with its own liver damage concerns.
