How Many Beats Per Minute Is a Normal Heart Rate?

A normal resting heart rate for adults falls between 60 and 100 beats per minute (bpm). That range applies when you’re awake, calm, and sitting still. Where you land within it depends on your fitness level, age, medications, and several other factors that shift your baseline up or down.

What Counts as Resting Heart Rate

Your resting heart rate is the number of times your heart beats per minute while you’re awake and not physically active. It reflects how efficiently your heart pumps blood when demand is low. A heart that pushes more blood per beat doesn’t need to beat as often, which is why fitter people tend to have lower resting rates.

The 60 to 100 bpm window is the standard clinical range. A rate consistently above 100 bpm at rest is classified as tachycardia, while one below 60 bpm is called bradycardia. Neither is automatically dangerous. Plenty of healthy people sit just outside this range without any problems.

Normal Ranges for Children

Children’s hearts beat significantly faster than adults’, and the younger the child, the higher the rate. Here’s what’s considered normal while awake:

  • Newborn to 3 months: 85 to 205 bpm
  • 3 months to 2 years: 100 to 190 bpm
  • 2 to 10 years: 60 to 140 bpm
  • Over 10 years: 60 to 100 bpm (same as adults)

During sleep, children’s heart rates drop considerably. A sleeping toddler might run 75 to 160 bpm, while a sleeping child between 2 and 10 typically falls between 60 and 90 bpm. These wide ranges are normal because a child’s cardiovascular system is still maturing.

Why Athletes Often Have Lower Rates

Endurance training strengthens the heart muscle, allowing it to pump a larger volume of blood with each contraction. That means fewer beats are needed to circulate the same amount of oxygen. Well-trained athletes sometimes have resting heart rates in the 40s or low 50s. This is a sign of cardiovascular efficiency, not a problem. If you’re active and feel fine, a heart rate below 60 bpm is generally nothing to worry about.

What Happens to Your Heart Rate During Sleep

Your sleeping heart rate typically runs about 20% to 30% lower than your daytime resting rate. For most healthy adults, that means somewhere between 50 and 75 bpm. The lowest point usually occurs during deep, non-REM sleep, when your blood pressure also dips. During REM sleep (when dreaming happens), your heart rate can fluctuate and occasionally rise closer to waking levels.

If you use a wearable device that tracks overnight heart rate, don’t be alarmed by readings in the low 50s or even high 40s. That drop is a normal part of your body’s recovery cycle.

Factors That Raise or Lower Your Rate

Your resting heart rate isn’t fixed. It shifts throughout the day and across your life. Some of the biggest influences:

  • Age: Heart rate variability naturally decreases with age, and resting rate can gradually climb in older adults who aren’t physically active.
  • Stress and anxiety: Emotional stress activates your sympathetic nervous system, pushing your heart rate up even when you’re sitting still.
  • Caffeine and alcohol: Both can temporarily elevate heart rate. Chronic heavy alcohol use is associated with longer-term changes.
  • Temperature: Heat exposure raises your heart rate because your body works harder to cool itself.
  • Medications: Beta-blockers lower heart rate deliberately. Other medications, including some used for mental health conditions, can raise or lower it as a side effect.
  • Chronic conditions: Diabetes, thyroid disorders, and heart disease all influence resting heart rate over time.
  • Body weight: Carrying excess weight increases the workload on your heart, which can push resting rate higher.

Even your work schedule matters. People who regularly work night shifts tend to show increased sympathetic nervous system activity, and the effect appears to compound over years of shift work.

How to Check Your Heart Rate

The simplest method requires no equipment. Sit down and rest quietly for a few minutes first, then find your pulse at one of two spots: the inside of your wrist (on the thumb side, between the bone and the tendon) or the side of your neck (in the groove alongside your windpipe). Use the tips of your index and middle fingers, not your thumb, since your thumb has its own pulse that can interfere with the count.

Press lightly. Pushing too hard, especially at the neck, can actually slow blood flow and give you an inaccurate reading. Count the beats for a full 60 seconds for the most accurate result. A quicker alternative is counting for 15 seconds and multiplying by four, though this is slightly less precise. For the most consistent baseline, check at the same time of day, ideally in the morning before coffee or exercise.

When Your Heart Rate Signals a Problem

A heart rate that’s occasionally outside the 60 to 100 range is common and usually harmless. What matters more is context. A resting rate above 100 that persists when you’re calm and haven’t had caffeine deserves attention, especially if it’s a new pattern. The same goes for a rate below 60 if you’re not physically active and you’re feeling dizzy or unusually fatigued.

Serious symptoms paired with an unusual heart rate are the real red flags. Chest pain, shortness of breath, and fainting all warrant emergency care. A type of abnormal rhythm called ventricular fibrillation can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure severe enough to make someone collapse and lose their pulse within seconds. That’s a life-threatening emergency.

For most people, though, the number on your wrist or fitness tracker is just a useful data point. Tracking it over weeks and months gives you a picture of your cardiovascular fitness trend, which is more meaningful than any single reading.
