Most adults burn somewhere between 1,600 and 2,400 calories a day, though the actual number varies widely based on your size, age, sex, and how much you move. A small, sedentary woman might sit closer to 1,600, while a large, physically active man could burn 3,000 or more. Understanding what drives that number helps you figure out where you personally fall.

Your daily calorie burn comes from four main sources: your resting metabolism, the energy it takes to digest food, everyday movement that isn’t exercise, and deliberate physical activity. Each one contributes a different share, and some are far more under your control than others.

Resting Metabolism: The Biggest Piece

Breathing, circulating blood, maintaining body temperature, repairing cells, and running your brain all require energy around the clock. Digesting Food Burns Calories Too

Exercise: A Smaller Share Than Expected

Why Calorie Estimates Are Often Wrong

Fitness trackers and smartwatches are often worse. Research from Harvard’s School of Engineering found that wearable devices can have error rates of 30 to 80 percent when estimating calories burned during exercise. That “450 calories burned” notification after your workout could easily be 250 or 700 in reality.

The gold standard for measuring your actual metabolic rate is a test called indirect calorimetry, where you breathe into a device that measures how much oxygen you consume and carbon dioxide you produce. It’s available at some hospitals, sports medicine clinics, and university labs, typically for $100 to $250. If precision matters to you, whether for medical reasons or because you’ve been stuck at a plateau, it’s the only way to get a reliable personal number.

Treat these numbers as reasonable starting estimates, not precise measurements.
