Your body burns between 1,200 and 2,000 calories a day just keeping you alive, even if you never get out of bed. This baseline energy use, called your basal metabolic rate (BMR), accounts for 60% to 70% of all the calories you burn in a day. It covers everything from breathing and circulating blood to repairing cells and maintaining body temperature.
What “Just Living” Actually Costs
Every second of the day, your organs are working. Your heart beats roughly 100,000 times, your lungs cycle air in and out, your kidneys filter blood, and your brain processes information even during sleep. All of that requires fuel. The brain, liver, heart, and kidneys together account for about 60% to 70% of your resting calorie burn, despite making up less than 6% of your total body weight. These organs have metabolic rates 15 to 40 times greater than the same weight of muscle tissue, and 50 to 100 times greater than fat tissue.
Skeletal muscle, on the other hand, makes up 40% to 50% of your body weight but only accounts for 20% to 30% of your resting energy expenditure. A pound of muscle burns roughly 4.5 to 7 calories per day at rest. That’s meaningful when you add it up across your whole body, but it’s far less than the popular claim of 50 calories per pound that circulates in fitness circles.
Typical Calorie Ranges by Sex and Size
BMR varies significantly from person to person, but general ranges give you a useful starting point. Most adult women have a BMR somewhere between 1,200 and 1,500 calories per day, while most adult men fall between 1,500 and 2,000 calories per day. The difference comes down mainly to body size and composition: men typically carry more muscle mass and weigh more, both of which increase resting calorie needs.
Your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) adds physical activity and the energy cost of digesting food on top of your BMR. For someone with a desk job and no exercise routine, BMR represents the vast majority of their daily calorie burn. Even for active people, it’s still the single largest component.
The Biggest Factors That Shift Your Number
Four things have the most influence on how many calories you burn at rest:
- Body size and composition. Larger bodies and bodies with more lean tissue burn more at rest. This is the single biggest variable.
- Age. Metabolism declines by about 0.7% per year in adulthood. By age 90, resting energy expenditure is roughly 26% lower than in middle age. This reflects both a loss of metabolically active tissue and a decline in how hard individual organs work.
- Sex. Hormonal differences and typical body composition differences mean men generally burn more at rest than women of the same age and weight.
- Genetics and hormones. Thyroid function in particular plays a direct role in metabolic rate. Two people of the same size, age, and sex can have meaningfully different BMRs.
How to Estimate Your Own BMR
The most widely recommended formula for estimating resting metabolic rate is the Mifflin-St. Jeor equation. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics considers it the most accurate option when direct measurement isn’t available. It predicts resting metabolic rate within 10% of the true value for about 70% of people. Here’s how it works:
For men: (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) + 5
For women: (10 × weight in kg) + (6.25 × height in cm) – (5 × age in years) – 161
To use pounds and inches, divide your weight by 2.2 to get kilograms and multiply your height in inches by 2.54 to get centimeters. As a quick example, a 35-year-old woman who weighs 150 pounds and stands 5’5″ would have an estimated BMR of about 1,380 calories per day.
Keep in mind that this formula tends to underestimate more often than it overestimates. Up to 21% of predictions fall below the actual measured value, while only about 9% overestimate. If you’re using this number to plan your nutrition, it’s a solid starting estimate rather than a precise measurement.
BMR vs. RMR: A Small but Real Difference
You’ll sometimes see “resting metabolic rate” (RMR) used interchangeably with BMR, but they’re measured differently. True BMR requires lying down in a dark room first thing in the morning after a 12-hour fast in a temperature-controlled environment. RMR is measured under more relaxed conditions: you only need to fast for 2 to 4 hours, and it can be taken at any time of day. RMR typically comes out slightly higher than BMR because of these looser conditions, but the two values are usually close enough that the distinction doesn’t matter for everyday purposes.
Why This Number Matters for Weight Management
Your BMR sets the floor for how many calories your body needs. Eating significantly below this number for extended periods can trigger adaptive responses: your body slows certain metabolic processes to conserve energy, which makes further weight loss harder and can leave you feeling fatigued, cold, or mentally foggy. This is one reason very low-calorie diets often backfire over time.
Understanding your BMR also puts exercise into perspective. A 30-minute jog might burn 250 to 350 calories, which feels significant. But your body already burned 50 to 80 calories during that same half hour just by existing. The calories you burn “just living” dwarf what most people burn through intentional exercise, which is why nutrition has a larger impact on weight than activity alone for most people.
