How Many Calories Does the Average Person Burn a Day?

The average adult burns between 1,600 and 3,000 calories per day, depending on sex, age, and activity level. Women typically burn 1,600 to 2,400 calories daily, while men burn 2,000 to 3,000. Those numbers come from federal dietary guidelines based on reference-sized adults: a 5’10”, 154-pound man and a 5’4″, 126-pound woman. Your actual number depends on several factors, and understanding them gives you a much more useful answer than a single average.

Where Your Calories Actually Go

Most people think of calorie burn as something that happens during exercise, but the biggest chunk of your daily energy goes to simply keeping you alive. Your basal metabolic rate, the energy your body uses for breathing, circulating blood, maintaining body temperature, and running your brain, accounts for 60% to 70% of everything you burn in a day. For someone burning 2,200 calories total, that means roughly 1,300 to 1,500 calories are spent before any movement at all.

The rest splits between physical activity and digesting food. Your body actually spends energy breaking down what you eat, a process called the thermic effect of food. Protein costs the most to digest, using up 15% to 30% of the calories it contains. Carbohydrates use 5% to 10%, and fats use almost nothing at 0% to 3%. This is one reason high-protein diets can slightly increase your overall calorie burn.

Then there’s all the movement that isn’t formal exercise: walking around your house, fidgeting, standing up, cooking, carrying groceries. This type of everyday activity can vary by up to 2,000 calories per day between two people of similar size, according to research from the Mayo Clinic. That’s an enormous range, and it explains why some people seem to eat freely without gaining weight. They’re simply moving more throughout the day without thinking about it.

Calorie Burn by Age and Activity Level

The FDA publishes estimated daily calorie needs broken down by age, sex, and three activity levels: sedentary (only the movement of daily living), moderately active (equivalent to walking 1.5 to 3 miles per day), and active (equivalent to walking more than 3 miles per day). Here’s how the numbers play out across adulthood.

Why Men Burn More Than Women

Men burn more calories partly because they tend to be larger, but size isn’t the whole story. Even after adjusting for differences in body composition, age, and activity, women’s metabolic rate runs about 5% to 10% lower than men’s. That translates to a few hundred fewer calories burned per day. The gap is driven largely by the fact that men carry more muscle mass on average, and muscle tissue is more metabolically active than fat. The common belief is that metabolism tanks in your 30s or 40s, but a large 2021 study published in Science found something different. The meaningful decline doesn’t begin until around age 63, when calorie burn starts dropping by about 0.7% per year. By age 90, adjusted energy expenditure is roughly 26% below that of middle-aged adults.

So if you’re gaining weight in your 30s or 40s, it’s probably not your metabolism slowing down in any biological sense. It’s more likely a gradual shift in activity, muscle mass, or eating habits. The real metabolic slowdown is a later-life phenomenon, and even then, it’s partly explained by losing muscle and overall body mass.

The averages above are just starting points. Several factors push your actual calorie burn higher or lower.

Body size and composition matter most. A 220-pound person burns significantly more calories than a 140-pound person doing the same activities, because it takes more energy to move and maintain a larger body. Within that, the ratio of muscle to fat matters. Muscle tissue burns roughly twice as many calories at rest as the same weight in fat. Your internal organs, particularly your brain, liver, and kidneys, are actually the biggest energy consumers pound for pound, burning 15 to 40 times more than muscle. But since you can’t grow a bigger liver on purpose, muscle is the component you can influence.

Activity level is the most variable factor. A sedentary office worker and a construction laborer of the same size and age can differ by 800 or more calories per day. Even within sedentary lifestyles, small differences in everyday movement, pacing while on the phone, taking stairs, walking to a coworker’s desk instead of emailing, create a meaningful gap over time.

Diet composition plays a smaller but real role. Eating more protein increases the energy cost of digestion. Someone getting 30% of their calories from protein will burn noticeably more through digestion alone than someone eating a fat-heavy diet with minimal protein.

Estimating Your Own Calorie Burn

If you want a number more specific than the ranges above, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is the most validated formula for estimating resting metabolic rate. A systematic review found it predicted resting metabolism within 10% of lab-measured values more often than any competing formula, in both normal-weight and obese individuals. Most online TDEE (total daily energy expenditure) calculators use this equation, then multiply by an activity factor to estimate your full daily burn.

The inputs are simple: your weight, height, age, and sex. The calculator gives you a resting number, then adjusts upward based on how active you are. Keep in mind that these are still estimates. Individual variation is real, and two people with identical stats can differ by several hundred calories. If you’re using calorie burn estimates to manage your weight, treat the number as a starting point and adjust based on what actually happens over two to three weeks.

Wearable fitness trackers offer another approach, using heart rate and movement data to estimate calorie burn throughout the day. They tend to be reasonably accurate for resting metabolism and walking, but less reliable for strength training and high-intensity exercise. They’re useful for spotting trends in your activity patterns, even if the absolute number is off by 10% to 15%.
