Most 10-year-olds fall somewhere in the moderately active category, putting the target around 1,600 to 1,800 calories for the majority of kids this age.

Why Activity Level Matters More Than Age Alone

The 800-calorie gap between a sedentary girl and an active boy is significant. A child who plays soccer four days a week genuinely needs more fuel than one who spends most free time reading or playing video games. Neither pattern is automatically a problem, but the calorie needs are different, and feeding both kids the same portions doesn’t make sense.

If your child seems constantly hungry and is growing normally, they likely need calories closer to the higher end of their range. If they regularly leave food on the plate and are maintaining a healthy growth curve at checkups, they’re probably getting enough.
