How Many Calories Should a Female Eat a Day?

Most adult women need between 1,600 and 2,400 calories per day, depending on age, body size, and how physically active they are. A 25-year-old who exercises regularly will need significantly more fuel than a 60-year-old with a desk job, so there’s no single magic number. The right target for you depends on a few key factors worth understanding.

Calorie Needs by Age and Activity Level

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans breaks down estimated daily calorie needs for women into three activity categories: sedentary (basically just the movement of daily living), moderately active (equivalent to walking 1.5 to 3 miles per day), and active (walking more than 3 miles per day on top of normal activity).

Here’s how the numbers fall for adult women:

  • Ages 19 to 25: 2,000 (sedentary), 2,200 (moderately active), 2,400 (active)
  • Ages 26 to 30: 1,800 (sedentary), 2,000 (moderately active), 2,400 (active)

Calorie needs peak in the late teens and early twenties, then gradually decline. The biggest drop happens around age 51, when sedentary needs fall by about 200 calories compared to the previous decade. That shift is largely driven by natural changes in muscle mass and metabolism.

How to Estimate Your Personal Number

The ranges above are population-level estimates. For a more personalized figure, you can calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR), which is the number of calories your body burns at complete rest just to keep you alive. The widely used Harris-Benedict equation for women is:

BMR = 447.593 + (9.247 × weight in kg) + (3.098 × height in cm) − (4.330 × age in years)

To convert pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.2. To convert inches to centimeters, multiply by 2.54. Once you have your BMR, multiply it by an activity factor to get your total daily energy expenditure:

There is, however, a floor. Women should not go below 1,200 calories per day without medical supervision. Diets under 800 calories per day are classified as very-low-calorie diets and carry real health risks, including nutrient deficiencies, gallstones, and muscle loss. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends these only in medical settings with close monitoring. If your calorie math puts you below 1,200, it’s better to increase activity rather than cut food intake further.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Pregnancy doesn’t require extra calories right away. During the first trimester, your needs stay roughly the same as before pregnancy. In the second trimester, the CDC recommends adding about 340 calories per day, and in the third trimester, about 450 extra calories per day. That third-trimester bump is the equivalent of a couple extra snacks, not eating for two in any dramatic sense.

Menopause and Metabolic Shifts

Many women notice weight creeping up during perimenopause and beyond, and the math backs this up. According to the Mayo Clinic, you may need about 200 fewer calories per day in your 50s compared to your 30s and 40s just to maintain the same weight. This happens because of hormonal shifts that reduce muscle mass, which in turn lowers your resting metabolic rate. What Active Women Need to Know

Women who train seriously often undereat without realizing it. Chronically eating too little while training hard can lead to lost menstrual periods, stress fractures, and declining performance, a condition known as Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). In many cases, adding just 300 to 350 calories per day is enough to restore normal menstrual cycles without cutting back on training.

If you’re exercising intensely and noticing irregular periods, persistent fatigue, or frequent injuries, insufficient calorie intake is one of the first things to investigate.

How to Split Those Calories

Once you know your calorie target, how you divide it among protein, carbohydrates, and fat matters too. Federal dietary guidelines recommend these ranges for adult women:
