How Many Days After Conception Is Implantation?

Implantation typically happens 6 to 10 days after conception, with most embryos implanting between days 8 and 10. The process isn’t instantaneous: once the embryo reaches the uterine wall, it takes several days to fully embed itself in the lining.

The Implantation Timeline, Day by Day

After a sperm fertilizes an egg in the fallopian tube, the resulting embryo spends its first several days dividing and traveling toward the uterus. By around day 5, it has developed into a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst and has shed its outer protective shell. This is when it’s ready to make contact with the uterine wall.

On days 6 to 7, the embryo positions itself against the uterine lining, orienting so that the cluster of cells that will become the fetus faces inward. At this stage, it’s loosely resting on the surface and could still be dislodged. By days 7 to 8, the outer cells of the embryo lock onto the lining’s surface cells, forming a bond that can no longer be disrupted. From days 8 through 11, those outer cells actively burrow into the uterine wall, establishing the early connections that will eventually become the placenta. By the end of the second week after conception, the embryo is fully embedded.

Why Timing Matters More Than You’d Expect

The day implantation happens has a surprisingly strong effect on whether a pregnancy survives. Research from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences tracked natural conceptions and found that embryos implanting by day 9 had only a 13 percent chance of early pregnancy loss. That risk nearly doubled to 26 percent for day 10, jumped to 52 percent on day 11, and reached 82 percent for anything later. Every embryo that implanted after day 12 was lost.

The difference between pregnancies that survived and those that didn’t was only about one day on average (9.1 days versus 10.5 days). That narrow margin underscores how precisely timed the process needs to be.

The Uterine Window That Controls Everything

Your uterus isn’t receptive to an embryo at just any point. In a typical 28-day cycle, the lining becomes “reception-ready” between cycle days 19 and 23, roughly 6 days after the hormonal surge that triggers ovulation. This four-day stretch is called the implantation window.

Progesterone is the hormone that opens this window. After ovulation, progesterone transforms the uterine lining so it can accept an embryo. Tiny surface structures appear on the lining cells that help the embryo attach. If progesterone signaling is off, whether too weak or poorly timed, the window can shift or never fully open, which is one of the most common reasons implantation fails even when a healthy embryo is present.

Only about 25 to 30 percent of fertilized eggs successfully implant, whether conceived naturally or through fertility treatments. The majority of conceptions are lost before a person ever knows they were pregnant.

What Implantation Feels Like

Most people feel nothing during implantation. The most commonly discussed sign is light bleeding or spotting, which some people notice around 7 to 10 days after ovulation. Implantation bleeding is distinct from a period in several ways: it’s typically brown, dark brown, or pink rather than bright red. It lasts anywhere from a few hours to two days, compared to three to seven days for a period. And it’s light enough to look more like discharge than a flow. You won’t soak a pad.

Some people also report mild cramping, but this is difficult to distinguish from premenstrual cramping since the timing overlaps. The so-called “implantation dip,” a brief drop in basal body temperature around days 7 to 8, gets a lot of attention in fertility communities. But the evidence is thin. A large analysis from the fertility tracking app Fertility Friend found the dip appeared in only 23 percent of charts that resulted in pregnancy and in 11 percent of charts that didn’t. You can be pregnant without the dip, and you can have the dip without being pregnant.

When a Pregnancy Test Can Detect Implantation

Your body starts producing hCG, the hormone pregnancy tests detect, only after implantation begins. Blood tests can pick up very small amounts of hCG as early as 7 to 10 days after conception. Home urine tests generally need a bit more hormone to register a positive result, which is why they’re most reliable starting around 10 days after conception, or roughly the day of your expected period.

Testing too early is the most common reason for a false negative. If implantation happens on the later end of the window, say day 10 or 11, hCG levels may not be high enough for a home test to detect until a few days after your missed period. If you get a negative result but your period still hasn’t arrived, testing again 48 hours later gives hCG more time to build.

Implantation During IVF

In IVF, the timeline shifts slightly because the embryo is placed directly into the uterus rather than traveling there on its own. After a day-5 blastocyst transfer (the most common type), the embryo begins hatching from its shell on day 1 post-transfer, starts attaching to the uterine wall on days 2 to 3, and completes implantation by day 5. A pregnancy test is typically scheduled about 9 days after the transfer.

The overall implantation rate per transferred embryo is similar to natural conception, around 25 to 30 percent for a single embryo. However, transferring chromosomally normal embryos significantly improves the odds. Some studies estimate that three consecutive transfers of chromosomally normal embryos can yield a cumulative success rate above 90 percent in patients with a healthy uterine lining.
