Here’s how that breaks down in practice: if you wake up with flu symptoms on a Monday, you were likely already contagious on Sunday. You’d be most infectious Monday through Thursday, and by the following Sunday or Monday, you’d typically stop shedding the virus. That said, the timeline isn’t a hard cutoff. Some people clear the virus by day five, while others still shed detectable amounts on day seven or slightly beyond.
Fever is a useful signal. Infectiousness is higher when you have a fever, and a dropping temperature generally tracks with declining viral levels. The CDC’s current guidance says you can return to normal activities once your symptoms are improving overall and you’ve been fever-free for at least 24 hours without using fever-reducing medication.
You’re Contagious Before You Feel Sick
One of the trickiest aspects of flu transmission is that roughly 24 hours of contagiousness happens before symptoms appear. During that window, you feel fine but are already releasing virus into the air when you breathe, talk, or cough. This pre-symptomatic spread is a major reason flu moves so quickly through households, offices, and schools.
It’s also possible to catch the flu, shed the virus, and never develop symptoms at all. Research estimates that somewhere between 16% and 19% of influenza infections are completely asymptomatic. These silent infections are less contagious than symptomatic ones, roughly half as transmissible based on household studies, but they still contribute to spread. In one South African study, 6% of household contacts got infected from someone with no symptoms, compared to 14% from a visibly sick person.

The exact duration varies widely depending on the person’s specific situation, but prolonged infections lasting weeks are possible.
Antivirals Can Shorten the Window

In clinical trials, treated patients shed influenza A virus for a median of three days compared to five days without treatment. The total amount of virus shed dropped more than tenfold. Results for influenza B were more mixed, with some studies showing a reduction from five days to three and a half, while others showed less consistent benefit.
Antivirals don’t work for everyone, though. Between 20% and 40% of treated volunteers in one study continued shedding virus at rates similar to untreated participants, suggesting the medication had little effect on their contagiousness. Starting treatment late, more than two days after symptoms begin, also reduces its effectiveness. So while antivirals can help you stop being contagious sooner, they’re not a guarantee.

Flu spreads primarily through respiratory droplets produced when you cough, sneeze, or talk. The flu virus can survive on hard surfaces like doorknobs and countertops for up to 24 hours, though it becomes less infectious over time. This is why frequent handwashing matters, particularly during the first few days of illness when you’re shedding the most virus.
Practical Guidelines for Returning to Life
The safest approach combines the CDC’s fever rule with an awareness of the shedding timeline. Wait until your symptoms are clearly improving and you’ve gone a full 24 hours without fever (and without taking anything to lower it). For most people, this happens somewhere around day five to seven of illness, which conveniently aligns with when viral shedding drops off.
If you must be around others during the first week of illness, wearing a mask significantly reduces the amount of virus you release into shared air. Keep your distance when possible, cover coughs and sneezes, and wash your hands frequently. These measures matter most during days one through four, when your viral output is at its highest.
