Cycle timing is counted from the first day of your period, not the last. So when you hear “ovulation happens on day 14,” that means 14 days from the start of bleeding, not from when bleeding stops. For someone with a five-day period and a 28-day cycle, that leaves roughly nine days between the end of menstrual bleeding and ovulation.

The problem is that most people don’t have a textbook 28-day cycle every month. Normal cycles range from 21 to 35 days, and your ovulation day shifts accordingly. A more reliable rule: ovulation happens about 12 to 14 days before the start of your next period. The second half of your cycle (after ovulation) stays relatively consistent at around two weeks. It’s the first half, the stretch between your period and ovulation, that varies the most from cycle to cycle and person to person. How to Estimate Your Ovulation Day

If your cycle is consistently 30 days, subtract 14 from 30. That puts ovulation around day 16. For a 26-day cycle, it’s closer to day 12. For a 35-day cycle, roughly day 21. The formula is simple: take your average cycle length and subtract 14.

If your cycles are irregular, a single calculation won’t be reliable. One approach is the calendar method: track your cycles for six months, then subtract 18 from your shortest cycle and 11 from your longest. Those two numbers give you the range of days when you’re most likely fertile. For example, if your shortest cycle is 27 days and your longest is 32, your fertile window falls roughly between days 9 and 21. That’s a wide window, which reflects the reality of irregular cycles.

Cervical Mucus Changes

In the days before ovulation, vaginal discharge becomes slippery, stretchy, and clear, similar to raw egg whites. This fertile-quality mucus typically appears for three to four days. In a 28-day cycle, that usually means around days 10 through 14. When you notice this change, ovulation is likely within a day or two.

Basal Body Temperature

Your resting temperature rises slightly after ovulation, anywhere from 0.4°F to 1°F. You won’t feel this shift, but a basal thermometer (taken first thing each morning before getting out of bed) can detect it. The catch is that the temperature rise confirms ovulation already happened, so it’s more useful for understanding your pattern over several months than for predicting ovulation in real time.

Thyroid disorders, both overactive and underactive, interfere with the pituitary gland’s ability to trigger ovulation. In your 20s and early 30s, cycles tend to be the most regular, and the pre-ovulation phase stays fairly predictable. As you move into your late 30s and 40s, the pool of available eggs shrinks, and your body’s hormonal signals shift in response. This can cause cycles to become shorter for a time, with ovulation happening earlier, sometimes as soon as day 8 or 9. Later in the transition toward menopause, cycles often become longer and more erratic as there are stretches where no egg develops on schedule, pushing ovulation later or causing it to be skipped entirely.
