After ovulation, you are fertile for roughly one day at most. The egg survives in the fallopian tube for less than 24 hours after release, and the highest pregnancy rates occur when sperm meets the egg within four to six hours of ovulation. By the day after ovulation, the chance of conceiving drops to about 1%.
This surprises many people because the “fertile window” is often described as lasting about six days. But nearly all of that window falls *before* ovulation, not after it. Understanding why helps whether you’re trying to conceive or trying to avoid pregnancy.
Why the Fertile Window Is Mostly Before Ovulation
The fertile window exists because sperm and eggs have very different lifespans. Sperm can survive three to five days inside the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes. That means sperm from intercourse on a Monday could still fertilize an egg released on Thursday or Friday. The egg, by contrast, is viable for less than 24 hours.
This mismatch is why sex in the days leading up to ovulation is far more likely to result in pregnancy than sex afterward. Data from the British Fertility Society illustrates this clearly: intercourse two days before ovulation carries a 26% chance of pregnancy, while intercourse one day after ovulation drops to just 1%. What Happens to the Egg After 24 Hours
Once released from the ovary, the egg enters the fallopian tube and begins its slow journey toward the uterus. If no sperm reaches it within that narrow window, the egg degrades and is reabsorbed by the body. There’s no second chance within the same cycle. After that 24-hour mark, conception is essentially off the table until the next ovulation.
If fertilization does happen in time, the timeline shifts to implantation. The fertilized egg divides as it travels, becoming a cluster of about 100 cells over the course of a week. Around six days after fertilization, this cluster attaches to the uterine lining. This is why a pregnancy test won’t turn positive for roughly two weeks after ovulation, even though fertilization happened much earlier.
How Your Body Signals That Ovulation Has Passed
Two changes in your body can help you recognize when ovulation is over and the fertile window has closed.
Cervical mucus: In the days around ovulation, cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, often compared to raw egg whites. After ovulation, rising progesterone causes the mucus to thicken and dry up. This shift typically happens within a day or two. When your mucus becomes sticky, tacky, or nearly absent, it’s a reliable sign that the fertile phase has ended.
Basal body temperature: Your resting temperature rises slightly after ovulation, usually by about 0.2 to 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit, driven by the same progesterone surge. The catch is that the temperature shift confirms ovulation only after the fact. By the time you see two or three consecutive days of elevated temperatures, the egg is already long gone. This makes temperature tracking useful for understanding your cycle patterns over time but not very helpful for catching the fertile window in real time.
Timing Intercourse If You’re Trying to Conceive
Because the egg’s lifespan is so short, the most effective strategy for conception is to have sperm already waiting in the fallopian tubes when ovulation occurs. That means the two to three days before ovulation are your highest-probability days, not the day after. Having intercourse every one to two days during the five days leading up to expected ovulation covers the window well.
Ovulation predictor kits, which detect a hormone surge 24 to 36 hours before the egg is released, give you a useful heads-up. Cervical mucus changes also signal that ovulation is approaching. Combining these signs gives you the best shot at identifying your peak days rather than relying on a single method.
If You’re Trying to Avoid Pregnancy
The tight post-ovulation window might sound reassuring, but the difficulty is pinpointing exactly when ovulation happened. Cycles vary from month to month, and ovulation can shift by several days due to stress, illness, travel, or hormonal fluctuations. Fertility awareness methods that rely on temperature and mucus tracking have relatively high failure rates in typical use because of this uncertainty. If you’re using these methods, most guidelines recommend treating yourself as potentially fertile until you have clear confirmation, through both temperature rise and mucus changes, that ovulation has passed.
The post-ovulation phase of your cycle (from confirmed ovulation through the start of your next period) is the least fertile time. Once you’ve confirmed ovulation through multiple signs, the remaining days of that cycle carry very little pregnancy risk. The challenge is always in the confirmation, not the biology itself.
