Most people ovulate around day 14 of their menstrual cycle, counting from the first day of their period. If your period lasts about five days, that means ovulation typically happens roughly 9 to 10 days after your period ends. But this timing varies significantly depending on your cycle length and how long your body takes to prepare an egg for release.
How Ovulation Timing Is Counted
Day 1 of your cycle is the first day of your period, not the last. This is the detail that trips most people up. When you see “ovulation happens on day 14,” that clock starts ticking the moment your period begins, not when it’s over.
So if your period lasts 4 days, you’d ovulate about 10 days after it ends. If it lasts 7 days, ovulation might come just a week later. The number of days between your last day of bleeding and ovulation depends on two things: how long your period is and how long your overall cycle is.
Why Day 14 Is Only an Average
The first half of your cycle, from your period through ovulation, is called the follicular phase. During this stretch, your body is growing and maturing an egg inside one of your ovaries. The follicular phase ranges from 14 to 21 days, and its length determines exactly when you ovulate. This is the part of the cycle that varies most from person to person.
The second half of the cycle, after ovulation, is more consistent. It runs about 14 days regardless of your total cycle length. This means you can roughly estimate your ovulation day by subtracting 14 from your total cycle length. In a 28-day cycle, that’s day 14. In a 32-day cycle, it’s closer to day 18. In a short 24-day cycle, ovulation may happen as early as day 10.
If your cycles are irregular, ranging from 25 days one month to 35 the next, your ovulation day shifts accordingly. There’s no single fixed day that works for everyone.
What Actually Triggers Ovulation
Ovulation doesn’t happen gradually. It’s triggered by a sudden spike in a hormone called LH (luteinizing hormone). Once that spike begins, ovulation follows about 36 to 40 hours later. The limitation here is that the temperature shift tells you ovulation already happened, so it’s more useful for understanding your pattern over several months than for predicting ovulation in real time.

Subtract 14 from your cycle length, and the result is your approximate ovulation day (counted from day 1 of your period). Then subtract the number of days your period typically lasts, and you have the approximate number of days between the end of your period and ovulation.
- 24-day cycle, 4-day period: ovulation around day 10, about 6 days after your period ends
- 28-day cycle, 5-day period: ovulation around day 14, about 9 days after your period ends
- 32-day cycle, 6-day period: ovulation around day 18, about 12 days after your period ends
- 35-day cycle, 5-day period: ovulation around day 21, about 16 days after your period ends
These are estimates. Your follicular phase can vary by several days from cycle to cycle even if your overall pattern is fairly regular. Stress, illness, travel, and changes in sleep or exercise can all push ovulation earlier or later in a given month.
