That second half stays fairly locked in for each individual. These kits are widely available at pharmacies and are one of the most reliable ways to identify your fertile window in advance.

Basal body temperature tracking works differently. Your resting temperature rises by about 0.4 to 1.0°F after ovulation and stays elevated until your period. When you see three consecutive days of higher temperatures, you can confirm that ovulation already happened. The catch is that this method tells you after the fact rather than beforehand, so it’s most useful for learning your pattern over several cycles rather than predicting ovulation in the moment.

Your Fertile Window Is Wider Than One Day

Even though the egg only survives about 12 to 24 hours after release, sperm can live inside the reproductive tract for three to five days. This means your fertile window actually opens several days before ovulation, not just on ovulation day itself. The highest chance of conception comes from the two days before ovulation and the day of ovulation.

If you’re trying to conceive, this is good news. You don’t need to pinpoint the exact hour of ovulation. Having sex in the few days leading up to it gives sperm time to be in position when the egg arrives. If you’re trying to avoid pregnancy, it means you need to account for a wider window than just one day.

When Your Luteal Phase Is Unusually Short

A luteal phase shorter than 10 days can make it harder to get pregnant, because the uterine lining may not have enough time to prepare for a fertilized egg before the period starts.
