People with a history of withdrawal seizures, those who’ve been through multiple withdrawal episodes, and heavy long-term drinkers face the highest risk. This is one of the key reasons medical supervision matters: medications can prevent seizures before they happen.

Where you fall on this spectrum depends largely on your drinking history. Someone who’s been drinking a bottle of wine nightly for a few months will have a very different experience than someone who’s consumed a fifth of liquor daily for years. Prior withdrawal episodes, your overall health, and whether you quit abruptly or tapered gradually all factor in as well.

The physical danger is concentrated in the first week. The psychological recovery takes much longer and benefits from ongoing support, whether that’s therapy, peer groups, or structured treatment programs. Understanding that the timeline extends well beyond those first few days helps set realistic expectations for what the process actually feels like.
