The size and age of the female alligator are the strongest biological factors determining the number of eggs she lays. Larger, older females generally produce larger clutches than smaller, younger females. How Alligators Build Their Nests

Cooler incubation temperatures, ranging from 82 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit (28 to 30 degrees Celsius), exclusively produce female alligators. Warmer temperatures, 90 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33 to 34 degrees Celsius), produce an almost entirely male clutch. Temperatures falling within the intermediate range (86 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) result in a mix of both male and female hatchlings. Because the center of the nest mound is usually warmer than the periphery, a single nest often produces both sexes, with males developing at the center and females at the cooler edges.
