Passing gas 14 to 23 times a day is normal for healthy adults. That range might sound high, but most of those episodes are small, odorless, and go completely unnoticed. If you’re consistently above 23 times a day or noticing a sudden change, something in your diet or digestion may be worth looking into.

Where the Gas Actually Comes From

Your body produces intestinal gas from two main sources. The first is swallowed air. Every time you eat, drink, chew gum, or even talk, you take in small amounts of air. Some of that air travels through your digestive tract and exits as gas. Sinus issues with postnasal drip can also increase the amount of air you swallow without realizing it.

The second, larger source is bacterial fermentation in your large intestine. Trillions of bacteria live in your colon, and their job is to break down food your small intestine couldn’t fully digest. That process generates gas as a byproduct. This is why certain foods, particularly carbohydrates and fiber, produce more gas than others. Fats and proteins generate very little.

Why Most Gas Doesn’t Smell

About 99% of the gas you pass is made up of five odorless compounds: nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and methane. The proportions vary wildly from person to person. Nitrogen alone can make up anywhere from 11% to 92% of a single episode, while hydrogen ranges from nearly zero to 86%. This variability explains why some people produce noticeably more volume than others, even on similar diets.

The smell comes from the remaining 1%, which contains sulfur compounds. Hydrogen sulfide creates the classic rotten egg odor. Methanethiol smells more like rotting vegetables or garlic. Dimethyl sulfide adds a cabbage-like quality. Foods rich in sulfur, such as eggs, meat, garlic, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower, tend to produce smellier gas because they give your gut bacteria more sulfur to work with.

Foods That Increase Gas the Most

The biggest driver of gas production is poorly digested carbohydrates, sometimes grouped under the term FODMAPs (fermentable sugars and fibers that feed gut bacteria). A few categories stand out:

  • Raffinose: A complex sugar found in beans, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, and whole grains. Humans lack the enzyme to break it down in the small intestine, so it arrives in the colon intact and gets fermented.
  • Lactose: The natural sugar in milk, yogurt, cheese, and ice cream. It also shows up in processed foods like bread, cereal, and salad dressing. People who produce less of the enzyme that digests lactose will ferment more of it in the colon, producing more gas.
  • Sorbitol and other sugar alcohols: Found naturally in some fruits and added to sugar-free gums, candies, and diet products. These pass through the small intestine largely unabsorbed.

If you’ve recently increased your fiber intake, started eating more beans, or switched to sugar-free snacks, a temporary jump in gas is completely expected. Your gut bacteria population adjusts over a few weeks, and the volume typically decreases as your system adapts.

Differences by Age and Sex

Men and women produce roughly the same amount of gas, but the experience can differ. Women who have gone through menopause report changes in bowel function at significantly higher rates: 38% of postmenopausal women notice altered digestion compared to 14% of premenopausal women. Constipation becomes more common after menopause, and the laxatives sometimes used to manage it can increase flatulence as a side effect.

Pelvic floor changes also play a role. Women who have had multiple vaginal deliveries, particularly those involving episiotomy or assisted delivery with forceps or vacuum, may have reduced anal sphincter tone. This doesn’t mean more gas is being produced, but it can leak out more easily and be harder to control. Pelvic floor exercises can help strengthen those muscles over time.

When Extra Gas Signals Something Else

Passing gas more than 23 times a day doesn’t automatically mean something is wrong, but it’s worth paying attention to the pattern. A sudden, unexplained increase in gas, especially paired with other symptoms, can point to conditions like lactose intolerance, celiac disease, or bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.

Lactose intolerance is one of the most common culprits. If you suspect it, try removing dairy for a couple of weeks and see if your symptoms improve. Celiac disease, where the body reacts to wheat, barley, and rye, can also cause excess gas because unabsorbed nutrients ferment in the colon. A blood test can screen for it.

Certain red flags alongside excessive gas warrant a conversation with your doctor: unexplained weight loss, blood in your stool, fever, progressive diarrhea (especially at night), difficulty swallowing, or persistent abdominal pain. New-onset digestive symptoms in adults 55 and older also deserve closer evaluation. These don’t necessarily mean something serious is happening, but they’re the signals clinicians use to decide whether further testing is needed.

Simple Ways to Reduce Gas

If your gas frequency or smell bothers you, a few practical changes can make a noticeable difference. Eating more slowly and chewing with your mouth closed reduces the amount of air you swallow. Cutting back on carbonated drinks eliminates another source of swallowed gas. If you chew gum frequently, switching to a non-sugar-free variety removes sorbitol from the equation.

Keeping a food diary for three to five days can help you identify your personal triggers. Write down what you eat and when you notice gas, and patterns usually emerge quickly. The American College of Gastroenterology suggests tracking gas episodes in a simple “flatus diary” over three days to get a baseline before making dietary changes.

For most people, gas is simply a sign that your gut bacteria are doing their job. A healthy, fiber-rich diet will produce more gas than a processed one, and that’s not a problem to fix. The goal isn’t zero gas. It’s staying in a range that feels comfortable and doesn’t come with pain, bloating, or other symptoms that interfere with your day.
