Most healthy people lose between 50 and 100 hairs a day. That number sounds alarming until you consider the scale: your scalp holds roughly 80,000 to 120,000 hairs at any given time, so daily shedding represents a tiny fraction of the total. Losing hair is a normal, constant process, and the strands you find on your pillow or in your shower drain are almost always being replaced by new growth.
Why Hair Falls Out Every Day
Each hair on your head moves through a cycle with three phases: a growth phase that lasts two to six years, a short transition phase, and a resting phase that ends with the hair releasing from the follicle. At any point, about 85 to 90 percent of your hair is actively growing while the rest is in the resting or shedding stage. The 50 to 100 hairs you lose daily are simply the ones that have reached the end of their cycle. The follicle isn’t damaged. It resets and begins growing a new strand.
Wash Days vs. Non-Wash Days
If you’ve ever looked at the shower drain and panicked, here’s some reassurance: you lose more hair on days you shampoo, and that’s completely normal. The motion of scrubbing and rinsing dislodges hairs that were already loose and ready to fall. They would have come out eventually on their own. If you wash your hair only once or twice a week, the buildup of these ready-to-shed hairs means wash day can look especially dramatic. You’re not losing more hair overall; you’re just losing several days’ worth in one sitting.
Seasonal Shifts in Shedding
Your shedding rate isn’t constant throughout the year. A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology tracked hair loss across seasons and found that shedding peaked in late summer and early fall, around August and September. During that window, average daily loss was about 60 hairs, more than double the rate measured in winter. This happens because fewer follicles are in the active growth phase during late summer. So if you notice extra hair in your brush as fall approaches, it’s likely seasonal and temporary.
When Shedding Becomes Excessive
The clinical threshold for concern is consistently losing more than 100 hairs in a 24-hour period. At that level, dermatologists consider a condition called telogen effluvium, where a larger-than-normal percentage of hair follicles shift into the resting phase all at once. Normally, no more than about 10 to 15 percent of your follicles are resting. In telogen effluvium, that number jumps to 25 to 50 percent, which can make your ponytail feel noticeably thinner or leave clumps of hair on your pillowcase.
Common triggers include major physical stress (surgery, high fever, rapid weight loss), emotional stress, thyroid problems, and nutritional deficiencies, particularly iron and protein. The tricky part is timing: the heavy shedding typically starts two to three months after the triggering event, so the connection isn’t always obvious. The good news is that telogen effluvium is usually self-correcting once the trigger resolves, though regrowth can take six months to a year to become visible.
Postpartum Hair Loss
Pregnancy is one of the most common triggers for a temporary spike in shedding. During pregnancy, elevated hormones keep more hairs locked in the growth phase, which is why many people notice thicker hair while pregnant. After delivery, those hormones drop and all the hair that was “held back” enters the shedding phase at once.
On average, postpartum shedding begins around 3 months after delivery, peaks near 5 months, and tapers off by about 8 months. For some people it can stretch closer to a year. The volume of hair coming out can be startling, but it represents a backlog of normal shedding rather than permanent loss. Hair density typically returns to its pre-pregnancy baseline without treatment.
How Aging Affects Hair Density
Daily shedding rates stay relatively stable with age, but the math shifts underneath. Research on women found that hair density is highest between ages 20 and 30 and decreases steadily after that. For a while, the thinning goes unnoticed because individual hair strands actually get thicker through the mid-30s to mid-40s, compensating for the reduced number of hairs. After the mid-40s, strand diameter starts declining too, and the combined effect makes thinning increasingly visible through the 50s. This is a gradual process, not a sudden jump in daily shedding.
A Simple Way to Check at Home
If you’re worried about excessive shedding, there’s a quick self-check dermatologists use called the pull test. Grab a small cluster of about 50 to 60 hairs between your thumb and fingers, close to the scalp. Gently pull along the length of the hair from root to tip. If more than five or six hairs come out easily, that suggests active, above-normal shedding. Repeat in a few different areas of your scalp, since shedding patterns can vary by region. For accurate results, skip washing your hair for at least 24 hours beforehand, since a fresh shampoo removes loose hairs and can make the test look falsely normal.
Keep in mind that a single alarming day doesn’t mean much. Hair shedding fluctuates naturally with seasons, stress levels, how often you wash, and even how roughly you brush. What matters is a sustained change over weeks, especially if you’re also noticing a wider part line, a thinner ponytail, or visible scalp where you didn’t see it before.
