Newborns sleep about 16 to 17 hours per day, but almost never more than 1 to 3 hours at a stretch. That round-the-clock pattern can feel chaotic, and it is. For the first few months of life, there are no official sleep recommendations because “normal” varies so widely from one baby to the next. What matters more than hitting a specific number is understanding the rhythm your newborn naturally follows and knowing when to step in.
What “16 to 17 Hours” Actually Looks Like
Seeing that number might make you think newborns are asleep most of the day. They are, but it doesn’t feel that way. For the first two months, sleep comes in short bursts between feedings, typically 30 minutes to 3 hours at a time. Your baby wakes for roughly two hours, feeds, and goes back down. This happens around the clock, day and night, with no real pattern.
Newborns can’t distinguish between day and night. They haven’t yet developed an internal 24-hour rhythm, so expecting longer stretches at nighttime in the early weeks isn’t realistic. That biological clock takes time to mature, and until it does, sleep is scattered evenly across the full 24 hours. Some babies sleep closer to 14 hours total, others closer to 19, and both can be perfectly healthy. Signs Your Newborn Is Ready to Sleep
Newborns can’t tell you they’re tired, but they show it clearly if you know what to look for. Common tired cues include yawning, clenching fists, pulling at ears, and staring into space. You might also notice fluttering eyelids, jerky arm and leg movements, arching backward, or a furrowed, worried-looking expression. Some babies suck on their fingers when they’re winding down, which can actually be a positive sign that they’re trying to self-settle.

When to Wake a Sleeping Newborn

Nearly all babies lose weight in the first few days after birth and typically regain it within one to two weeks. Safe Sleep Basics
Since newborns spend the vast majority of their day asleep, where and how they sleep matters enormously. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends placing your baby on their back for every sleep, whether it’s a nap or nighttime. The sleep surface should be firm and flat, meaning it shouldn’t indent under your baby’s weight, and anything inclined more than 10 degrees is not safe.
Use a crib, bassinet, or play yard that meets current safety standards, with only a fitted sheet on the mattress. Keep pillows, blankets, toys, bumper pads, and loose bedding out of the sleep space entirely. These items increase the risk of suffocation and entrapment. If your baby falls asleep in a car seat, swing, or carrier, move them to a flat sleep surface as soon as you can.
Room sharing (keeping your baby’s sleep space in your bedroom but not in your bed) can reduce the risk of SIDS by as much as 50%, according to the AAP. Bed sharing is not recommended under any circumstances. If you bring your baby into your bed for feeding or comfort, return them to their own sleep space before you fall asleep. Dressing your baby in one layer more than you’d wear keeps them comfortable without overheating, which is another risk factor for SIDS.
Helping Day and Night Patterns Emerge
You can’t force a newborn onto a schedule, but you can give gentle cues that nudge their internal clock along. During daytime feedings and wake windows, keep the lights on, let normal household sounds continue, and engage with your baby. At night, keep things dim and quiet. Feed and change your baby with as little stimulation as possible, then put them right back down.
