How Many Hours of Sleep Do Kids Need by Age?

The amount of sleep kids need changes significantly as they grow, ranging from up to 16 hours a day for infants down to 8 to 10 hours for teenagers. These aren’t rough estimates. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine published specific ranges for each age group, and the numbers include naps for younger children.

Recommended Sleep by Age

  • 4 to 12 months: 12 to 16 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 1 to 2 years: 11 to 14 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 3 to 5 years: 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
  • 6 to 12 years: 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours
  • 13 to 18 years: 8 to 10 hours per 24 hours

These ranges exist because individual kids vary. A 4-year-old who sleeps 10 hours and wakes up energized is getting enough, even though another child the same age might need closer to 13. The key is whether your child is alert, focused, and in a stable mood during the day.

Why Naps Count for Younger Kids

For children under 5, those totals include daytime naps because young brains aren’t yet capable of consolidating all their sleep into one nighttime stretch. Most children stop napping between ages 2 and 5, with some dropping naps before their third birthday. When naps disappear, nighttime sleep needs to increase to compensate. A 3-year-old who naps for two hours only needs about 8 to 11 hours at night to hit the 10-to-13-hour target, but once naps end, all of that sleep has to happen overnight.

What Sleep Actually Does for Growing Bodies

Sleep promotes tissue growth and regulates metabolism, largely by enhancing the release of growth hormone. During both deep sleep and dream sleep, the brain’s hormone-signaling system ramps up production of growth hormone from the pituitary gland. This isn’t a minor uptick. The brain actively suppresses the signals that normally hold growth hormone back, creating strong surges that don’t happen during waking hours. For kids who are literally building bones, muscle, and neural connections every day, this process is essential.

Short sleep also disrupts metabolism in ways that show up years later. A large Japanese cohort study tracked children from age 2.5 to 5.5 and found that toddlers sleeping 8 hours or less per night were 54% more likely to be obese by age 5.5 compared to those sleeping 11 hours or more. The relationship followed a clear dose pattern: less sleep meant progressively higher risk.

How Sleep Deprivation Looks Different in Kids

Adults who don’t sleep enough get sluggish. Kids often go the opposite direction. In younger children, insufficient sleep frequently shows up as hyperactivity and impulsiveness, which can look strikingly similar to ADHD. Other common signs include trouble paying attention, poor mood regulation (the child who seems constantly upset or “moody”), and decreased social skills. Over time, chronic short sleep can interfere with brain development and learning.

These symptoms are easy to misread. A school-age child who can’t sit still in class or melts down over minor frustrations may not have a behavioral problem. They may just be tired. If your child consistently falls short of the recommended range for their age, sleep is worth examining before exploring other explanations.

Why Teenagers Stay Up So Late

If your teenager can’t seem to fall asleep before midnight, biology is partly to blame. During puberty, the brain’s internal clock shifts later. Melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep, gets released later in the evening than it does in younger children or adults. Your teen genuinely isn’t sleepy at 10 p.m., even though they need 8 to 10 hours and have to be up at 6:30 for school.

This creates a chronic sleep deficit that accumulates across the school week. A teenager getting 6 or 7 hours on school nights is missing 1 to 3 hours per night, which adds up to 5 to 15 lost hours by Friday. Weekend catch-up sleep helps, but it can’t fully reverse the cognitive and emotional effects of five short nights in a row.

Building a Sleep Environment That Works

The room itself matters more than most parents realize. Harvard’s Healthy Buildings program recommends keeping bedroom temperature between 65 and 70°F for comfortable sleep. The room should be as dark as possible, with room-darkening shades blocking outside light. In the hour before bed, blue light from screens and overhead lights suppresses melatonin production, so switching to warm, dim lighting during the wind-down period helps the brain recognize that sleep is coming.

How Quickly Bedtime Routines Pay Off

A consistent bedtime routine is one of the most effective tools for helping kids fall asleep faster, and it works surprisingly quickly. A study of infants and toddlers found that a simple nightly routine (a bath, a massage, and quiet activities) reduced the time it took children to fall asleep within just the first three nights. Other improvements, including fewer nighttime wake-ups, better sleep quality, and easier bedtimes, continued to build over the following two weeks.

The routine doesn’t need to be elaborate or long. What matters is consistency: the same sequence of calming activities, in the same order, at roughly the same time each night. This gives your child’s brain a predictable set of cues that sleep is approaching, which is especially valuable for toddlers and preschoolers who can’t yet tell time or regulate their own sleep schedules.
