A 7-year-old needs 9 to 12 hours of sleep every 24 hours. That’s the recommendation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, which the CDC also endorses. The National Sleep Foundation narrows it slightly to 9 to 11 hours for school-age kids (ages 6 to 13). In practice, most 7-year-olds do best with about 10 to 11 hours per night.
Why the Range Is So Wide
Three hours is a big gap, and that’s because individual kids vary. Some children genuinely function well on 9 hours, while others are noticeably worse off without a full 11 or 12. Genetics, activity level, and whether your child is going through a growth spurt all play a role. The best indicator isn’t the clock. It’s whether your child wakes up on their own (or close to it), stays alert through the school day, and doesn’t melt down by late afternoon.
What Happens During Those Hours
Sleep isn’t downtime for a 7-year-old’s body. It’s when some of the most important developmental work happens. Growth hormone follows a pulsatile pattern tied to the sleep cycle, with the highest concentrations released during the deep sleep stages in the first few hours after falling asleep. Kids who consistently cut sleep short may miss out on a meaningful portion of that nightly growth hormone peak.
A single sleep cycle runs about 90 to 120 minutes, cycling through lighter stages, deep sleep, and REM sleep before starting over. Most people complete four or five full cycles per night. For a child sleeping 10 to 11 hours, that means five or even six complete cycles, giving the brain more time in REM sleep, the stage most closely linked to memory consolidation and learning. This is one reason sleep matters so much during the school years, when kids are absorbing new information all day long.
Sleep Deprivation Looks Different in Kids
A sleep-deprived adult gets sluggish. A sleep-deprived 7-year-old often gets wired. Research from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that children who consistently sleep less than they need are more likely to develop behavioral problems that look a lot like ADHD: hyperactivity, impulsivity, difficulty sitting still, and trouble paying attention. In one study, kids who slept less during preschool were rated by parents as more hyperactive and less attentive by the time they reached kindergarten.
This is worth knowing because it means the signs of insufficient sleep in your child might not be yawning and droopy eyes. Watch instead for difficulty concentrating on homework, increased emotional outbursts, clumsiness, or a pattern of getting a “second wind” right around bedtime. These are common red flags that a child’s sleep window needs to shift earlier or longer.
Working Backward From the Morning Alarm
The simplest way to figure out the right bedtime is to start with when your child has to wake up and count backward. If the bus comes at 7:15 a.m. and your child needs 20 minutes to get ready, that’s a 6:55 wake-up. For 10.5 hours of sleep, lights out would need to be around 8:15 to 8:30 p.m., factoring in 10 to 15 minutes to actually fall asleep.
Here’s a quick reference based on common wake-up times:
- 6:30 a.m. wake-up: bedtime between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.
- 7:00 a.m. wake-up: bedtime between 8:00 and 8:30 p.m.

These assume your child needs roughly 10 to 11 hours. If your child consistently wakes before the alarm feeling rested, they may be fine at the lower end. If they’re hard to wake every morning, shift bedtime earlier by 15 to 30 minutes for a week and see what changes.
Screens and the Melatonin Problem
The biggest obstacle to an early bedtime for most families isn’t willingness. It’s that the child isn’t sleepy yet. Screens are often the reason. Research on students using LED tablets found that just two hours of screen exposure before bed suppressed melatonin (the hormone that signals your brain it’s time to sleep) by 55% and delayed its natural onset by an average of 1.5 hours compared to reading a printed book under low light.
Children’s eyes are more sensitive to blue light than adults’ because their lenses are clearer, letting more of it through to the brain’s internal clock. A 7-year-old watching a tablet until 8 p.m. may not feel genuinely sleepy until 9:30 or later, even if their body needs to be asleep by 8:15. Turning off screens 60 to 90 minutes before the target bedtime and switching to books, drawing, or quiet play makes a measurable difference in how quickly kids fall asleep.
Building a Sleep-Friendly Routine
At age 7, most kids still benefit from a predictable wind-down sequence. It doesn’t need to be elaborate. A consistent order of events (snack, bath, teeth, reading, lights out) performed at roughly the same time each night helps the brain recognize that sleep is coming. The routine itself becomes a cue, much like how feeling hungry at noon is partly habit rather than pure biology.
Weekends are where many families lose ground. Letting a child stay up an hour or two later on Friday and Saturday and then sleep in creates a mini jet-lag effect by Monday morning. Keeping weekend bedtimes within 30 to 45 minutes of the weekday schedule prevents that Monday drag and makes the whole week smoother.
Room environment matters too. A cool, dark room (around 65 to 70°F) supports longer, more uninterrupted sleep. If your child is afraid of the dark, a dim red or orange nightlight is preferable to a blue or white one, since warmer-toned light has less impact on melatonin production.
