Despite how straightforward the guideline sounds, most teens aren’t hitting it. CDC data from a survey of middle school students across nine U.S. states found that 57.8% were getting less sleep than recommended. Only about 27% were consistently sleeping 9 or more hours a night.

If your 13-year-old seems wired at 10 p.m. but impossible to wake at 7 a.m., that’s not laziness or defiance. Puberty physically rewires the brain’s internal clock. This biological shift means a 13-year-old’s brain may not be ready for sleep until 10:30 or 11 p.m., even though a 6:30 a.m. alarm demands they be up early for school. The result is a daily sleep deficit that compounds over the week.
What Happens When Teens Don’t Get Enough
Sleep isn’t just rest for a 13-year-old. It’s when the brain consolidates what was learned during the day, transferring new information from short-term to long-term memory. Sleep restriction reduces the amount of time spent in the specific sleep stages tied to verbal learning and problem-solving ability. Part of the reason involves impulse control. The frontal lobe, which helps restrain impulsive behavior, isn’t fully developed in the teen brain. Sleep deprivation further lowers inhibitions on top of that natural vulnerability. Combine mood problems, normal adolescent impulsivity, and chronic sleep loss, and the risk of dangerous decisions increases substantially.
Screens and the Melatonin Problem
Blue light from phones, tablets, and laptops is particularly disruptive for teens trying to fall asleep. The eyes contain specialized cells that are most sensitive to the short-wavelength blue light (460 to 480 nanometers) emitted by LED screens. When these cells detect blue light in the evening, they send a signal to the brain that suppresses melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it’s time to sleep.

Physical activity during the day also promotes better sleep quality, though intense exercise close to bedtime can have the opposite effect.
What the Right Amount of Sleep Looks Like
The 8-to-10-hour recommendation is a range because individual needs differ. Some 13-year-olds function well on 8 hours and 15 minutes, while others clearly need closer to 9.5. You can get a sense of your teen’s true need during a stretch with no alarm clock, like the first week of summer break. After a few days of catching up on lost sleep, the amount they naturally settle into is a good approximation of their biological requirement.
