The most practical way to determine when a simulation has run “enough” is by monitoring the convergence of the output statistic. The most precise way to determine the required number of iterations is to solve for $N$ based on a desired maximum acceptable error, known as the error tolerance ($E$). This method requires a preliminary run to estimate the standard deviation ($S$) of the output variable. Practical Trade-offs and Computational Limits

Once the output is reasonably stable, doubling the number of iterations only yields an approximately 41% reduction in the standard error, which often does not justify the doubling of computation time.
For complex simulations, such as those modeling molecular dynamics or high-dimensional financial derivatives, the cost of running millions of additional trials quickly becomes prohibitive. A researcher might have a target error tolerance of 0.1%, but if achieving that level requires a month of computation time on a cluster, a pragmatic trade-off is necessary.
