How Many Ounces of Blood Are in the Human Body?

The average adult has about 150 to 170 ounces of blood in their body, roughly 1.2 to 1.5 gallons. The exact amount depends primarily on your size and sex, since blood volume scales with body weight rather than being a fixed number for everyone.

How Blood Volume Is Calculated

Blood makes up roughly 7% to 8% of your total body weight. Clinicians estimate it more precisely using a per-kilogram formula: adult males carry about 75 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight, while adult females carry about 65 milliliters per kilogram. That difference is largely due to variations in body composition, since muscle tissue holds more blood than fat tissue.

For a 180-pound man, this works out to about 6.1 liters, or roughly 206 ounces. A 140-pound woman would have approximately 4.1 liters, or about 139 ounces. A smaller or larger person will fall proportionally outside those numbers, but most healthy adults land somewhere in the range of 130 to 210 ounces total.

What Blood Is Made Of

About 55% of your blood volume is plasma, a yellowish liquid made mostly of water that carries nutrients, hormones, and proteins throughout your body. The remaining 45% is cells, predominantly red blood cells, which account for 40% to 45% of total blood volume on their own. White blood cells and platelets make up a comparatively tiny fraction. This ratio of cells to plasma, called hematocrit, is one of the basic measurements in a standard blood test.

Blood Volume in Babies and Children

Newborns actually have more blood per pound of body weight than adults do. A full-term infant carries about 85 milliliters per kilogram, and premature babies carry even more, around 95 to 100 milliliters per kilogram. In absolute terms, though, a newborn’s total blood volume is tiny. A 7.5-pound baby has only about 10 ounces of blood in their entire body. This is one reason blood loss during delivery or neonatal procedures is monitored so carefully.

When Blood Volume Changes

Your blood volume isn’t static. Several common situations can shift it significantly.

Pregnancy triggers one of the most dramatic changes. Blood volume begins rising as early as six to eight weeks into pregnancy, climbing progressively until around 28 to 30 weeks. Most women end up with about 45% more blood than their pre-pregnancy baseline, though the increase can range anywhere from 20% to 100%. This expansion supports the placenta and growing fetus while also preparing the body for the blood loss that naturally occurs during delivery.

Regular exercise also expands blood volume over time. Research comparing trained athletes to sedentary individuals shows a strong relationship between fitness level and circulating blood volume. The extra volume gives athletes a larger fluid reserve for sweating and temperature regulation, and it allows the heart to fill more completely with each beat, improving cardiovascular output. Prolonged inactivity has the opposite effect, gradually shrinking blood volume.

High altitude triggers a different kind of change. When you live at elevation long-term, lower oxygen levels stimulate your body to produce more red blood cells. People who develop altitude-related polycythemia (chronic overproduction of red blood cells) can have total blood volumes roughly 1.7 liters higher than people living at sea level. Their red cell mass increases by about 27%, though plasma volume actually decreases somewhat, making the blood thicker and more viscous.

How Much Blood You Can Lose

Understanding total blood volume puts blood loss into perspective. Losing up to 15% of your blood, about 25 ounces in an average adult, is classified as Stage 1 hemorrhage. You might feel slightly anxious but your body compensates well at this level. Stage 2 begins between 15% and 30% loss, or up to about 51 ounces, where heart rate rises and blood pressure starts to drop.

A standard blood donation collects one pint, roughly 16 ounces, which represents less than 10% of most adults’ total supply. Your body replaces the liquid plasma portion within about 24 hours. The red blood cells take considerably longer, around four to six weeks to fully regenerate, which is why donation centers require at least an eight-week gap between whole blood donations.

Why the Number Varies So Much

If you’ve seen different answers ranging from “about a gallon” to “one and a half gallons,” that’s because blood volume genuinely varies that much from person to person. A 120-pound woman and a 220-pound man can differ by more than two full liters. Age, fitness level, hydration status, pregnancy, altitude, and body composition all shift the number further. The commonly cited figure of “about 10 pints” or “1.2 gallons” is a reasonable midpoint for an average-sized adult, but your own volume could sit well above or below that depending on your body.
