How Many People Get Cancer Every Year and Why It’s Rising

About 20 million people worldwide are diagnosed with cancer every year. In the United States alone, an estimated 2 million new cases are expected in 2025, which works out to roughly 5,600 diagnoses every single day. These numbers have been climbing steadily, driven by aging populations, improved detection, and a troubling rise in cancers among younger adults.

Global Cancer Cases at a Glance

The most recent global data, compiled by the World Health Organization’s cancer research agency, counted an estimated 20 million new cancer cases in 2022. That same year, 9.7 million people died from the disease, making cancer the second leading cause of death worldwide after heart disease.

Not all cancers are equally common. The five most frequently diagnosed types globally in 2022 were:

  • Lung cancer: 2.5 million new cases
  • Breast cancer: 2.3 million new cases
  • Colorectal cancer: 1.9 million new cases
  • Prostate cancer: 1.5 million new cases
  • Non-melanoma skin cancer: 1.2 million new cases

Lung cancer reclaimed the top spot from breast cancer in recent years, largely because of rising tobacco use in parts of Asia and Africa. Together, these five cancer types account for nearly half of all diagnoses worldwide.

How Many Americans Get Cancer Each Year

The American Cancer Society estimates 2,041,910 new cancer diagnoses in the United States in 2025 and 618,120 cancer deaths. The U.S. represents about 10% of the global cancer burden despite having roughly 4% of the world’s population, a gap explained partly by longer life expectancy (cancer risk rises sharply with age) and partly by widespread screening that catches cancers that might go undetected in countries with fewer medical resources.

One notable shift in the U.S. data: cancer diagnosis rates among women under 65 now exceed those among men in the same age range. Rising rates of breast and uterine cancers are the primary drivers, though researchers are still working to understand why.

Cancer Is Rising in Younger Adults

A comprehensive National Institutes of Health analysis found that between 2010 and 2019, incidence rates for 14 cancer types increased among Americans under age 50. This isn’t simply a case of better screening catching more disease. Five of those 14 cancer types, including melanoma, cervical cancer, and stomach cancer, rose only in younger age groups, not in older ones, suggesting something specific to younger generations is at play.

The largest absolute jumps were in breast cancer among younger women (about 4,800 additional cases in 2019 compared to the trend), followed by colorectal cancer (2,100 additional cases), kidney cancer (1,800), uterine cancer (1,200), and pancreatic cancer (500). Breast, colorectal, kidney, and uterine cancers together accounted for more than 80% of the additional early-onset cases. Researchers suspect a combination of rising obesity rates, dietary changes, and environmental exposures, though no single cause has been pinpointed.

Why the Numbers Keep Climbing

Rising case counts don’t necessarily mean your individual risk is skyrocketing. Several factors inflate the headline numbers. The world’s population is both growing and aging, and since cancer becomes far more common after age 50, more people reaching older ages naturally means more diagnoses. Screening programs also play a significant role: mammograms, colonoscopies, and PSA tests detect cancers that previously would have gone undiagnosed until they caused symptoms or were found at autopsy.

That said, the increase in early-onset cancers is a genuine shift in biology, not just an artifact of better detection. And in low- and middle-income countries, rates are rising as populations adopt more Western diets, reduce physical activity, and face increasing exposure to air pollution and alcohol.

Screening and Prevention Save Millions of Lives

While the number of cancer diagnoses is daunting, the picture is more encouraging than the raw figures suggest. Between 1975 and 2020, an estimated 5.94 million deaths were averted from just five major cancers (breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate) in the United States. Prevention and screening accounted for 80% of those saved lives, with treatment advances contributing the remaining 20%.

Smoking cessation alone was responsible for 3.45 million of those averted deaths, all from lung cancer. In colorectal cancer, screening and the removal of precancerous polyps prevented 79% of the deaths that would otherwise have occurred. Cervical cancer screening (Pap smears and HPV testing) accounted for essentially all 160,000 averted cervical cancer deaths during that period. For prostate cancer, PSA screening contributed 56% of the 360,000 deaths prevented, with treatment advances making up the rest.

Breast cancer tells a slightly different story. Treatment advances, including targeted therapies and improved surgical techniques, contributed about three-quarters of the 1 million breast cancer deaths averted since 1975, with mammography screening responsible for the remaining quarter.

How These Numbers Translate to Individual Risk

In the United States, roughly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will receive a cancer diagnosis at some point in their lifetime. But that statistic spans all ages and includes highly treatable cancers like non-melanoma skin cancer and early-stage prostate cancer. Cancer mortality has dropped steadily for three decades in the U.S. even as new diagnoses rise. The overall cancer death rate has fallen by roughly a third since its peak in the early 1990s, meaning more people are getting diagnosed but also more people are surviving. Earlier detection catches tumors when they’re smaller and more treatable, and advances in treatment have turned several once-deadly cancers into manageable conditions.
