The average adult carries between 9 and 12 pounds of blood. Women typically fall toward the lower end at around 9 pounds (4.1 kg), while men average closer to 12 pounds (5.5 kg). That makes blood roughly 7 to 8 percent of your total body weight.
How Blood Weight Is Estimated
The standard clinical estimate uses your body weight as the starting point. Adult men carry about 75 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight, and adult women carry about 65 milliliters per kilogram. So a 180-pound man (82 kg) would have roughly 6.1 liters of blood, while a 140-pound woman (64 kg) would have about 4.2 liters.
Blood is slightly denser than water, with a specific gravity of about 1.057 grams per milliliter. That means a liter of blood weighs just over 2.3 pounds, not exactly 2.2 pounds like a liter of water would. It’s a small difference, but it adds up across several liters. Using this density, 5 liters of blood (a common average for adults) weighs about 11.6 pounds.
What Makes Up Those Pounds
About 55 percent of your blood by volume is plasma, a pale yellow fluid that’s mostly water along with dissolved proteins, salts, and hormones. The remaining 45 percent is almost entirely red blood cells, the oxygen-carrying cells that give blood its color. White blood cells and platelets together make up less than 1 percent of blood’s volume, forming a thin layer called the buffy coat when blood is separated in a test tube.
In practical terms, if you have 11 pounds of blood, roughly 6 pounds of that is plasma and about 5 pounds is red blood cells. The white blood cells and platelets weigh almost nothing by comparison.
Why Blood Weight Varies Between People
Body size is the biggest factor, but it’s not as simple as “bigger person, more blood.” Blood volume correlates more closely with lean body mass (muscle, organs, bone) than with total body weight. Fat tissue is relatively low in blood supply compared to muscle and organs. A person who gains 20 kg of fat does not see a proportional 30 percent jump in blood volume, because fat cells simply expand rather than creating new tissue that demands heavy blood flow.
This means two people who weigh the same can carry noticeably different amounts of blood depending on their body composition. Someone with more muscle mass will generally have more blood than someone of the same weight with a higher body fat percentage. It also helps explain why men typically have more blood than women of similar size, since men on average carry more lean mass.
Blood Weight in Children and Newborns
Newborns and infants carry proportionally more blood relative to their size than adults do. A full-term newborn has about 80 to 90 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight, compared to 65 to 75 in adults. Premature babies have even more, up to 100 milliliters per kilogram. For a typical 8-pound newborn, that works out to roughly 10 to 12 ounces of blood, less than a pound.
As children grow, this ratio gradually decreases until it settles into the adult range. A 10-kilogram infant (about 22 pounds) carries around 80 milliliters per kilogram, which means roughly 1.8 pounds of blood.
How Much Blood You Can Afford to Lose
Your body can tolerate a surprising amount of blood loss before it becomes dangerous, but the threshold is lower than most people assume. Losing more than 15 to 20 percent of your blood volume triggers a condition called hypovolemic shock, where the heart can no longer pump enough blood to supply the body’s organs. For someone with 11 pounds of blood, that critical threshold is roughly 1.7 to 2.2 pounds, or a little under a liter.
For context, a standard blood donation draws about one pound of blood (roughly one pint or 470 milliliters). That’s about 8 to 10 percent of your total supply, which is why donation centers space visits at least eight weeks apart.
