The exact amount varies based on your size, sex, and body composition, but blood generally accounts for about 7 to 8 percent of your total body weight.
How Blood Volume Differs by Sex and Size
Adult men carry more blood per pound of body weight than adult women. Clinical estimates put the average at about 75 milliliters per kilogram of body weight for men and 65 milliliters per kilogram for women. For a 180-pound man, that translates to roughly 5.5 quarts. For a 140-pound woman, it’s closer to 4.3 quarts.
The biggest factor driving these differences is body composition. Muscle tissue is more vascular than fat tissue, meaning it contains a denser network of blood vessels and requires a larger blood supply. Someone with more lean muscle mass will typically have a higher blood volume than someone of the same weight with more body fat. This is why simple weight-based estimates are only approximations. Two people who weigh the same can have meaningfully different blood volumes depending on how much of that weight is muscle versus fat.
What’s Actually in Those Quarts
Blood isn’t a uniform fluid. About 60 percent of your total blood volume is plasma, the straw-colored liquid that carries nutrients, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. The remaining 40 percent is made up of cells, mostly red blood cells, with smaller numbers of white blood cells and platelets mixed in. When doctors talk about blood volume, they’re measuring everything together: plasma plus all the cellular components.
Blood Volume in Babies and Children
Newborns and infants have far less total blood than adults, but proportionally, blood makes up a larger share of their body weight. A full-term newborn carries about 80 to 90 milliliters of blood per kilogram, which for an average 7.5-pound baby comes out to roughly 10 to 11 ounces, less than a third of a quart. Premature infants have an even higher ratio, around 90 to 100 milliliters per kilogram.
As children grow, their blood volume per kilogram gradually decreases toward adult levels. By childhood, the ratio settles to about 70 to 80 milliliters per kilogram. A 60-pound child would have roughly 2 to 2.5 quarts of blood. The adult ratio of about 65 to 75 milliliters per kilogram is typically reached by adolescence.
How Pregnancy Changes Blood Volume
During pregnancy, blood volume increases dramatically to support the growing fetus and placenta. The total increase varies widely, but most pregnant people see their blood volume rise by about 45 percent above pre-pregnancy levels. Some experience increases as high as 100 percent. A person who normally has about 4.5 quarts of blood might carry 6.5 quarts or more by the third trimester. This expansion happens gradually, beginning in the first trimester and peaking around 32 to 36 weeks. It’s one reason pregnant people often feel their heart beating harder, as the cardiovascular system works to circulate a significantly larger volume of blood.
How Much Blood You Can Lose Safely
Your body can tolerate some blood loss without major problems, which is why blood donation is safe for most healthy adults. A standard donation removes 1 pint, roughly one-tenth of your total supply. Your body replaces the plasma portion within a day or two, though it takes several weeks to fully rebuild the red blood cells.
Problems start when losses go beyond that. Losing up to 15 percent of your blood volume (about 1.5 pints for an average adult) generally causes minimal symptoms, maybe a slightly faster heart rate. Between 15 and 30 percent, you’ll notice a faster pulse, feel anxious, and your skin may turn pale and cool. Losses between 30 and 40 percent cause a significant drop in blood pressure, confusion, and rapid breathing. Beyond 40 percent, the situation becomes life-threatening, as the heart can no longer pump effectively enough to supply oxygen to vital organs.
How Doctors Measure Blood Volume
The quart estimates most people encounter are based on simple formulas using body weight. These work well enough for general purposes but can be off for people at the extremes of body size or composition. When precision matters, such as before certain surgeries or when diagnosing blood disorders, doctors can measure blood volume directly using a test sometimes called a plasma volume test or red cell mass test. A small amount of a radioactive tracer is injected into a vein, allowed to mix with the blood, and then measured through blood draws taken at timed intervals. The tracer dilutes in proportion to the total volume, giving a precise measurement.
For everyday purposes, though, the simple math holds up well: multiply your weight in kilograms by 70 (or 75 for men, 65 for women) to get your approximate blood volume in milliliters. Divide by 946 to convert to quarts. Most adults will land somewhere between 4 and 6 quarts.
