Dark yellow or amber-colored urine means you need more fluid. Completely clear urine for most of the day could mean you’re overdoing it slightly, though for most people this is harmless.

Other signs of mild dehydration include dry mouth, fatigue, headaches, and difficulty concentrating. These tend to show up before you’ve lost enough fluid for it to become a medical concern, so they’re useful early warnings. If you’re urinating fewer than four times a day or your urine is consistently dark, that’s a reliable signal to increase your intake.

Can You Drink Too Much?

Yes, but it’s difficult to do under normal circumstances. Your kidneys can process up to about 25 liters of fluid per day, and roughly 0.8 to 1 liter per hour. Drinking water faster than your kidneys can handle dilutes sodium levels in the blood, a condition called hyponatremia. This is rare in everyday life but has occurred in endurance athletes and people who consume very large volumes of water in a short time.
