How Many Teeth Are in the Human Mouth: Adult & Baby

Adults have 32 permanent teeth, including wisdom teeth. In practice, many adults walk around with 28, either because their wisdom teeth were removed or never came in at all. Children start with a smaller set of 20 baby teeth, which are gradually replaced by the full adult set during childhood and adolescence.

The 32 Adult Teeth, by Type

Each type of tooth in your mouth has a specific shape and job. The 32 permanent teeth break down into four categories:

  • 8 incisors: The four front teeth on top and four on the bottom. These are flat-edged and designed for biting into food.
  • 4 canines: The pointed teeth next to your incisors, one on each side of the upper and lower jaw. They grip and tear food.
  • 8 premolars: Sitting behind the canines, two on each side of each jaw. They have a flatter surface for crushing food.
  • 12 molars: The large, broad teeth at the back of your mouth, including your four wisdom teeth. These do the heavy grinding.

Your teeth are arranged symmetrically. Whatever you count on the upper left, you’ll find the same on the upper right and lower left and lower right. Each quadrant of your mouth holds eight teeth: two incisors, one canine, two premolars, and three molars.

Children Have 20 Baby Teeth

Baby teeth, also called primary teeth, begin erupting around 6 months of age. By about age 3, most children have their full set of 20. This smaller set lacks premolars and has only eight molars instead of twelve, which makes sense given the smaller size of a child’s jaw.

Starting around age 6, baby teeth begin falling out as permanent teeth push through underneath. The transition happens gradually. The front teeth are typically replaced first, while the back molars hold on until age 10 to 12. The last permanent teeth to arrive are the wisdom teeth, which usually emerge between ages 17 and 25, if they emerge at all.

Why Most Adults Don’t Actually Have 32

While 32 is the standard number, the reality is more variable. Roughly half of all adults in the U.S. have had at least one wisdom tooth extracted by age 25, and that figure rises to about 70% by age 60, based on data from privately insured patients. Wisdom teeth are frequently removed because they become impacted (stuck beneath the gum), crowd other teeth, or come in at odd angles that make them hard to clean.

Some people never develop all four wisdom teeth in the first place. About 20% of the population is congenitally missing at least one wisdom tooth, meaning the tooth simply never forms. When you exclude wisdom teeth, roughly 2 to 10% of people are missing at least one other permanent tooth as well. This condition, called hypodontia, is genetic. It’s more common in certain populations and most often affects the upper lateral incisors (the teeth next to your front teeth) and the second premolars.

So while the textbook answer is 32, the functional number for many adults is 28, and individual variation is common.

How Tooth Count Changes With Age

Tooth loss increases significantly as people get older. Seniors aged 65 and older have an average of 20.7 remaining natural teeth, according to data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. About 17% of adults in that age group have lost all of their teeth. Gum disease, tooth decay, and wear from decades of use are the primary reasons teeth are lost later in life.

Why Humans Have Fewer Teeth Than Our Ancestors

Thirty-two teeth is actually a reduced number compared to earlier human relatives. In species like australopiths, the teeth toward the back of the mouth were enormous, with chewing surfaces two to four times larger than those of modern humans. Wisdom teeth in particular have been shrinking over evolutionary time, and in many people today they’re small, malformed, or absent entirely.

The likely reason is tool use. Once early members of our genus started processing food with stone tools and, eventually, cooking, the evolutionary pressure to maintain large, powerful back teeth relaxed. Smaller jaws and fewer teeth required less energy to develop. There’s also a biological mechanism at play: teeth that develop early in the jaw can inhibit the growth of teeth that form later. As overall tooth size decreased in the genus Homo, the teeth at the back of the mouth shrank disproportionately. That’s why wisdom teeth are the most likely to be small, misshapen, or missing altogether.
