How Many Times Does Your Heart Beat Per Minute?

A healthy adult heart beats 60 to 100 times per minute at rest. That number shifts depending on your age, fitness level, and what your body is doing at any given moment. Highly trained athletes can have resting heart rates as low as 40 beats per minute, which reflects a heart strong enough to pump more blood with each beat.

Normal Ranges by Age

Heart rate slows as you grow. Newborns have the fastest hearts, beating 85 to 205 times per minute while awake, because their small hearts need to pump more frequently to circulate blood through a rapidly developing body. By the time a child is 2 to 10 years old, the awake range drops to 60 to 140 beats per minute. After age 10, the range settles into the adult zone of 60 to 100.

Sleep lowers heart rate across all ages. A newborn’s heart beats 80 to 160 times per minute during sleep, while children over 10 drop to 50 to 90. If you’ve ever noticed your fitness tracker showing a lower number overnight, that’s completely expected.

How to Check Your Heart Rate

Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the inside of your wrist, between the bone and the tendon on the thumb side. Press lightly until you feel a steady pulse. Count the beats for a full 60 seconds. A quicker method is to count for 15 seconds and multiply by four, though the full minute gives a more accurate reading.

You can also check at your neck by placing two fingertips in the groove next to your windpipe. Never press on both sides of the neck at the same time, as this can make you dizzy or faint. In either spot, press gently. Pushing too hard can actually block blood flow and make the pulse harder to find.

What Pushes Your Heart Rate Up or Down

Your resting heart rate isn’t fixed. Caffeine is one of the most common daily influences. Consuming around 400 mg per day (roughly four cups of coffee) raises heart rate and blood pressure over time by stimulating the nervous system. People who drink more than 600 mg daily show elevated heart rates that stay high even after exercise and rest, according to data from the American College of Cardiology.

Stress, heat, dehydration, illness, and certain medications all push the number higher. Emotional stress triggers your fight-or-flight response, which speeds up the heart to prepare your body for action. Hot weather forces the heart to work harder as blood moves toward the skin to cool you down. On the other side, consistent aerobic exercise gradually lowers your resting rate by making the heart more efficient at pumping blood.

Heart Rate During Pregnancy

Pregnancy increases resting heart rate by 10 to 20 beats per minute by the third trimester, a jump of roughly 20% to 25%. A Harvard study tracking heart rate data throughout pregnancy found the median resting rate climbed from about 65.5 beats per minute before pregnancy to 77 beats per minute at its peak, around 8 weeks before delivery. Walking heart rate followed a similar pattern, rising from about 101.5 to 109.5 beats per minute. This increase is normal. The body produces up to 50% more blood during pregnancy, and the heart speeds up to circulate it.

When Heart Rate Is Too Fast or Too Slow

Doctors use two terms for heart rates outside the normal range. A rate below 60 beats per minute is called bradycardia. A rate above 100 beats per minute at rest is called tachycardia. Neither is automatically dangerous. Many fit people sit comfortably below 60 with no symptoms at all. And a rate above 100 can simply reflect caffeine, anxiety, or recent physical activity.

The threshold that typically causes concern is around 150 beats per minute at rest. Below that, serious symptoms are uncommon in people with otherwise healthy hearts. Those with existing heart conditions may feel symptoms at lower rates. Warning signs worth paying attention to include dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or persistent shortness of breath alongside an unusual heart rate.

Why Your Resting Rate Matters Long-Term

Resting heart rate is more than a snapshot of fitness. A large study following men for 16 years found that higher resting rates predicted a greater risk of death from all causes, even after accounting for exercise habits and other health factors. Compared to men with rates below 50 beats per minute, those with rates between 51 and 80 had a 40% to 50% higher risk. Rates between 81 and 90 doubled the risk. Rates above 90 tripled it.

Broken down as a continuous number, every 10-beat-per-minute increase in resting heart rate corresponded to roughly a 16% increase in mortality risk. This pattern held for both smokers and nonsmokers, though the effect was slightly stronger in smokers (20% per 10 beats versus 14%). A consistently elevated resting heart rate can signal that the heart is working harder than it needs to, which wears on the cardiovascular system over time.

Estimating Your Maximum Heart Rate

Your maximum heart rate is the fastest your heart can beat during intense exercise. The classic formula, 220 minus your age, has been used for decades but tends to underestimate the true maximum, especially in older adults, where it can be off by as much as 40 beats per minute. A more accurate formula developed from testing over 3,300 adults is 211 minus 0.64 times your age. For a 40-year-old, that gives a predicted max of about 185 rather than 180.

This number matters mostly for exercise. Moderate-intensity activity typically falls between 50% and 70% of your maximum heart rate, while vigorous exercise pushes you to 70% to 85%. Knowing your rough ceiling helps you gauge whether a workout is actually challenging your cardiovascular system or just feels hard.
