How Many Types of Bees Are There? A Look at Bee Variety

The general perception of a bee is often limited to the golden-brown, striped insect managed for honey production. This familiar image, however, represents only a minute fraction of the insect order Anthophila. There are over 20,000 known bee species globally, found on every continent except Antarctica. This diversity encompasses a wide range of sizes, colors, behaviors, and nesting habits, extending far beyond the typical honey-producing insect.

Defining the Scale of Bee Diversity

Over 20,000 bee species are recognized worldwide, classified into seven major families. This extensive number of species is organized primarily by their social structure, which dictates how they live and reproduce. The primary distinction is the split between the cooperative social bees and the majority of solitary bees. Bees occupy every habitat with insect-pollinated flowering plants, ranging in size from the minuscule Perdita minima (2 millimeters long) to the giant Megachile pluto (nearly 40 millimeters).

The Highly Organized Social Bees

Social bees, while few in number compared to their solitary relatives, are the most recognizable due to their cooperative lifestyles. True sociality, or eusociality, involves three characteristics: a shared nest site, a division of labor (queen and workers), and overlapping generations. These species, including honey bees (Apis) and bumble bees (Bombus), live in colonies where non-reproductive female workers maintain the nest and forage for resources.

Honey bees, such as the Western honey bee (Apis mellifera), form perennial colonies that can last for multiple years. This permanence requires them to stockpile large quantities of honey, which serves as a food source throughout the winter. Honey bees are the most economically valued pollinators globally, contributing billions of dollars annually to agriculture through their pollination services and the commercial production of honey.

Bumble bees are primitively social and have an annual life cycle. The entire colony, including the workers, dies off at the end of the season, and only newly emerged, fertilized queens survive to hibernate and start a new nest the following spring. Bumble bees are recognized for buzz pollination, a specialized foraging technique where they vibrate their flight muscles to dislodge tightly packed pollen. This action is effective for crops like tomatoes, potatoes, and blueberries, which require mechanical vibration for optimal pollen release.

The Vast Majority: Solitary Bees

The solitary lifestyle accounts for over 90% of the world’s bee species. These bees do not form colonies, produce honey, or have a worker caste system. Instead, each fertile female is responsible for building and provisioning her own nest cell, behaving as a single mother. The adult stage is relatively short, lasting only a few weeks, with the rest of their life spent developing inside the protected nest.

Solitary bee nesting habits are broadly divided into two groups: ground-nesting and cavity-nesting species. Approximately 70% are ground-nesters, such as Digger bees and Mining bees, which excavate tunnels in bare soil or banks. These bees often line their brood cells with secretions or materials like mud to protect the developing larva and its food supply of pollen and nectar.

The remaining 30% of solitary bees are cavity-nesters, utilizing existing holes in wood, hollow plant stems, or crevices. Leafcutter bees (Megachile) and Mason bees (Osmia) fall into this category, using distinct materials to construct their nests. Leafcutter bees cut semicircular pieces of leaves, often from roses, to form separate cells for their young. Mason bees, by contrast, use mud or clay to create walls and seal the entrance of their nesting tubes. The female places a pollen-and-nectar mixture inside each cell before laying an egg, sealing it off, and repeating the process until the tunnel is full.

Unique Adaptations and Unusual Varieties

Beyond the social-solitary dichotomy, certain bee species exhibit specialized behaviors and unique physical adaptations. Cuckoo bees (Nomadinae), for example, are kleptoparasites, meaning they do not collect pollen or build their own nests. The female cuckoo bee infiltrates the provisioned nest of another bee species and lays her egg, which then consumes the food meant for the host’s offspring.

Due to this parasitic lifestyle, cuckoo bees have lost the long, branched hairs known as a scopa or pollen basket, which other bees use to carry pollen. This reduction in hair often gives them a smoother, more wasp-like appearance. The cuckoo bee larva sometimes possesses specialized mandibles designed to kill the host larva or egg, ensuring access to the stored pollen ball.

Another specialized group is the metallic-colored Orchid bees (Euglossini) of Central and South America. The males do not collect pollen for consumption but instead collect volatile aromatic compounds from orchids, tree resins, and fungi. They store these fragrances in specialized pockets on their hind legs to create a species-specific perfume blend. This fragrance is then released at display sites to attract females for mating, making these bees specialized pollinators in a scent-driven courtship ritual.
