The average adult holds about 10 units of blood. One medical “unit” equals roughly 450 to 500 milliliters (about one pint), and the typical adult body contains around 5 liters total, which works out to 10 to 11 pints. That number shifts based on your size, sex, and age.
How Blood Volume Scales With Body Size
Blood makes up about 6 to 8 percent of your total body weight. A 150-pound person carries roughly 4.5 to 5.4 liters, while someone weighing 200 pounds may have closer to 6 liters. This is why doctors calculate blood volume using weight rather than relying on a single average: approximately 70 milliliters of blood per kilogram of body weight in adults.
Men generally carry more blood than women of the same weight, partly because of differences in body composition. A larger, more muscular frame demands a bigger blood supply. For most healthy adults, though, the 5-liter ballpark (roughly 10 units) holds true.
Children Carry More Blood Per Pound
Babies and children have less total blood than adults, but proportionally more relative to their size. A full-term newborn has about 80 to 90 milliliters per kilogram, compared to 70 ml/kg in an adult. Premature infants run even higher, at 90 to 100 ml/kg. By late childhood, the ratio gradually drops toward adult levels of 70 to 75 ml/kg.
This means a 7-pound newborn has only about 270 milliliters of blood, just over half a unit. It’s one reason pediatric blood loss is treated so urgently: small absolute volumes represent large percentages.
What Happens When You Lose Blood
Your body can handle small losses without much trouble, but the effects escalate quickly. Blood loss is typically measured in four stages based on the percentage of your total volume:
- Up to 15% (about 750 mL): Your heart rate may rise slightly, but blood pressure stays stable. Most people feel fine.
- 15% to 30% (750 to 1,500 mL): Heart rate climbs noticeably, blood pressure starts dropping, and you may feel anxious or lightheaded.
- 30% to 40% (1,500 to 2,000 mL): Confusion sets in, skin turns pale and cold, and the body struggles to maintain circulation.
- Over 40% (more than 2,000 mL): Life-threatening. Without intervention, organ failure can follow within minutes.
Losing about 4 units of blood, roughly 2 liters, puts most adults into dangerous territory. Losing more than that without a transfusion is often fatal.
How Much Blood You Give During Donation
A standard whole blood donation collects one unit, about 500 mL or one pint. That’s roughly 10% of an average adult’s total supply. Your body begins replacing the liquid portion (plasma) within hours, which is why you’re told to drink extra fluids afterward. The red blood cells take longer to replenish. Most donors see their hemoglobin levels return to normal within 6 to 12 weeks, which is why donation centers space appointments at least 8 weeks apart.
Your bone marrow produces about 2 million new red blood cells every second under normal conditions. After a donation, that production ramps up to rebuild your stores.
When Blood Volume Changes Naturally
Pregnancy is the most dramatic natural shift in blood volume. Total blood volume increases by roughly 45% over the course of a pregnancy, though the range can be anywhere from 20% to 100% above pre-pregnancy levels. Both plasma and red blood cell production rise, but plasma expands faster, which dilutes the concentration of red cells. This is why mild anemia during pregnancy is considered normal rather than a sign of deficiency.
Dehydration works in the opposite direction. When you lose fluid through sweat, illness, or inadequate intake, your plasma volume drops. The blood becomes thicker, your heart works harder to push it through vessels, and you may notice dizziness or fatigue. Rehydrating restores that volume relatively quickly, usually within a few hours for mild cases.
Exercise, altitude, and certain medical conditions also shift blood volume over time. Endurance athletes, for instance, tend to carry a higher plasma volume than sedentary people, which helps their cardiovascular system deliver oxygen more efficiently.
