How Much Acetaminophen Is in DayQuil Per Dose?

Each standard DayQuil LiquiCap contains 325 mg of acetaminophen. Since the recommended adult dose is two LiquiCaps, you get 650 mg of acetaminophen per dose. The liquid version contains the same amount: 325 mg per 15 mL, with a standard 30 mL dose delivering 650 mg total.

Acetaminophen Per Dose by Product

DayQuil comes in several forms, but the acetaminophen content stays consistent across them. Both the standard DayQuil Cold & Flu and the DayQuil Severe formulas contain 325 mg of acetaminophen per LiquiCap or per 15 mL of liquid. The key numbers to remember:

  • Per LiquiCap: 325 mg acetaminophen
  • Per adult dose (2 LiquiCaps or 30 mL liquid): 650 mg acetaminophen
  • Maximum daily doses: 4 doses in 24 hours
  • Maximum acetaminophen from DayQuil alone: 2,600 mg per day

Adults and children 12 and older can take one dose every four hours, up to four times daily. That puts your daily acetaminophen intake from DayQuil at up to 2,600 mg if you take the maximum number of doses.

How This Fits Into Daily Acetaminophen Limits

The FDA sets the maximum daily acetaminophen intake at 4,000 mg from all sources combined. At 2,600 mg per day from DayQuil alone, you’re already consuming about 65% of that ceiling. This leaves limited room for any other acetaminophen-containing medications you might take, including common pain relievers like Tylenol, Excedrin, or many prescription combination drugs.

This is where accidental overdose happens. Acetaminophen is one of the most common ingredients in over-the-counter medicines, and many people don’t realize they’re doubling up. DayQuil’s label specifically warns against using it with any other product containing acetaminophen.

Combining DayQuil and NyQuil

Many people take DayQuil during the day and switch to NyQuil at bedtime. Both contain 650 mg of acetaminophen per dose. NyQuil’s dosing schedule is every six hours, with a maximum of four doses in 24 hours, which would add another 2,600 mg on its own.

Obviously, you wouldn’t max out both products in the same 24-hour period. But even taking three doses of DayQuil during the day (1,950 mg) and one dose of NyQuil at night (650 mg) brings your total to 2,600 mg. That’s within the 4,000 mg limit, but it leaves no room for a headache pill or any other medication containing acetaminophen. If you’re alternating between the two products, track your total intake carefully across both.

Liver Warning on the Label

Every DayQuil product carries a liver warning because acetaminophen is processed by the liver, and too much can cause serious damage. The label flags three specific risk factors for liver injury:

  • Exceeding the dose: taking more than 4 doses (30 mL each) in 24 hours
  • Stacking medications: using DayQuil alongside other acetaminophen-containing drugs
  • Alcohol use: drinking 3 or more alcoholic beverages daily while taking the product

People with existing liver disease face a lower threshold. The American College of Gastroenterology recommends that patients with liver conditions limit their total daily acetaminophen to 2,000 mg or less. Since four doses of DayQuil alone would exceed that, anyone with liver problems should be especially cautious about how many doses they take.

Checking Your Other Medications

Acetaminophen shows up in more products than most people expect. It’s in many cold and flu remedies, sleep aids, migraine formulas, and prescription painkillers. Before taking DayQuil, check the active ingredients on every other medication you’re using. If the word “acetaminophen” (sometimes abbreviated as “APAP”) appears on any of them, you need to add those milligrams to what you’re getting from DayQuil and make sure the combined total stays under 4,000 mg per day, or under 2,000 mg if you have liver disease.
