Most clinical trials showing a testosterone increase used between 300 mg and 600 mg of ashwagandha root extract per day, typically for 8 to 12 weeks. The effective dose depends partly on the type of extract and its concentration, but that range covers the majority of positive results in human studies.
Doses Used in Clinical Trials
The research on ashwagandha and testosterone spans several dosing strategies, and understanding what was actually tested helps you pick a starting point. In a 2015 study of 57 men doing an 8-week resistance training program, participants took 300 mg of ashwagandha root extract twice daily (600 mg total). The group receiving ashwagandha saw testosterone rise from roughly 630 to 727 ng/dL, a meaningful bump of about 15%. A 2022 study used the same protocol, 300 mg twice daily for 8 weeks, and also found increased testosterone and improved sexual function compared to placebo.
A separate trial used a much more concentrated extract, delivering 21 mg of withanolide glycosides per day to overweight men aged 40 to 70 for 8 weeks. This lower-volume, higher-potency approach also raised testosterone levels. On the other end of the spectrum, older studies from 2009 and 2010 used 5 grams of raw ashwagandha root powder daily for 3 months in infertile men and found improvements in both testosterone and sperm quality. Five grams of whole root powder is a very different product from a concentrated extract, so the numbers aren’t directly comparable.
The practical takeaway: if you’re using a standardized root extract (the most common form sold as capsules), 300 mg twice daily or 600 mg once daily is the best-supported dose. If you’re using raw root powder, the studied dose is considerably higher at 5 grams per day.
Why the Extract Type Matters
Not all ashwagandha supplements contain the same thing. The three most common branded extracts are KSM-66, Sensoril, and Shoden, and they differ in meaningful ways.
- KSM-66 is a root-only extract designed to preserve the natural ratio of compounds found in ashwagandha root. Most of the testosterone-specific research has used KSM-66 or similar root extracts, typically at 600 mg per day.
- Sensoril uses both leaves and roots, and is higher in compounds linked to calming and sleep effects. It’s studied more for stress and cortisol reduction than for testosterone specifically.
- Shoden contains at least 35% withanolides, a much higher concentration than the other two. Because it’s more potent per milligram, effective doses can be lower, sometimes around 120 to 240 mg per day.
One important regulatory note: India’s food safety authority has prohibited the use of ashwagandha leaves in health products due to safety concerns around higher concentrations of a compound called Withaferin-A. Root-only extracts are considered the safer and more traditional form. If your supplement doesn’t specify “root extract” on the label, check the source material before buying.
How Ashwagandha Affects Testosterone
Ashwagandha is classified as an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body manage stress. The connection to testosterone runs largely through cortisol, your primary stress hormone. When cortisol stays chronically elevated, it suppresses the hormonal signaling chain that tells your body to produce testosterone. Ashwagandha appears to lower cortisol by interacting with stress-response pathways in the brain and adrenal glands, including the system that regulates calming neurotransmitter activity. With cortisol out of the way, the signals between your brain and testes can function more normally.
This is why the testosterone-boosting effect tends to be more pronounced in men who are stressed, sleep-deprived, or otherwise hormonally suboptimal. If your testosterone is already in a healthy range and your stress levels are well managed, the effect may be modest. The men in the infertility studies, who were under significant stress, saw some of the most dramatic improvements.
How Long Before You See Results
Ashwagandha is not fast-acting for hormonal changes. The shortest trials showing measurable testosterone increases ran for 8 weeks. Several of the stronger results came from 12-week (3-month) studies. You should not expect to notice hormonal effects in the first few weeks.
That said, some of ashwagandha’s other effects, like reduced anxiety and better sleep, can show up sooner, sometimes within 2 to 4 weeks. These changes may indirectly support testosterone by lowering your overall stress burden. If you’re going to test it, commit to at least 8 weeks of consistent daily use before evaluating whether it’s working for you.
When to Take It
There’s no strong evidence favoring morning over evening dosing for testosterone purposes. Some studies had participants take it after dinner, others split the dose into morning and evening. If you’re taking 600 mg daily, splitting it into two 300 mg doses is the most common protocol in the research, but a single daily dose has also worked in trials. Ashwagandha can cause drowsiness in some people, so if that happens, evening dosing makes more sense. Try different timing and stick with whatever feels best.
Safety and Duration Limits
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, ashwagandha is generally safe when taken for up to 3 months. There isn’t enough data to draw conclusions about long-term safety beyond that window. Common side effects are mild: drowsiness, stomach upset, diarrhea, or nausea.
The more serious concerns are rare but worth knowing. There have been documented cases of liver injury linked to ashwagandha supplements. Ashwagandha can also raise thyroid hormone levels, making it a poor choice for anyone with hyperthyroidism or autoimmune thyroid conditions. Because it increases testosterone, men with hormone-sensitive prostate cancer should avoid it entirely.
Ashwagandha can interact with medications for diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disorders, seizures, and drugs that suppress the immune system. It also has sedative properties that can compound with other calming medications. If you’re on any of these, check with a pharmacist about interactions before starting supplementation. Cycling off ashwagandha periodically, such as taking a month off after every 2 to 3 months, is a common practice to reduce the risk of suppressing your body’s natural stress-response system, though formal cycling protocols haven’t been studied in clinical trials.
Realistic Expectations
The best-documented testosterone increase from ashwagandha was about 15%, moving from roughly 630 to 727 ng/dL over 8 weeks in men who were also resistance training. Another trial found an increase from about 473 to 527 ng/dL over 60 days, roughly an 11% bump. These are real but moderate changes. For context, if your total testosterone is 400 ng/dL, a 15% increase would bring you to around 460, which may or may not be enough to change how you feel.
Ashwagandha works best as one piece of a larger picture. Sleep quality, body fat levels, resistance training, and stress management all have substantial effects on testosterone. A man who starts lifting weights, improves his sleep, and adds ashwagandha is going to see a much bigger shift than someone who takes a capsule and changes nothing else. The studies showing the strongest results combined ashwagandha with resistance training, which itself is one of the most reliable natural testosterone boosters.
